Final Jeopardy: Presidents and the White House (3-4-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/4/2015), in the category “Presidents and the White House” was:

When the current presidential occupant of the White House was born, this president was living there.

New champ Alvin Chin won a whopping $32,100 yesterday with the sole get in Final Jeopardy! Today he is up against these new challengers: Laura Lorson, from Perry, KS; and Dave Perkins, from Wenatchee, WA

Round 1: Dave found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Not So Desperate Measures” under the $600 clue. He was in the lead with $5,800, $2,200 more than Alvin in second place. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.

Dave finished in the lead with $12,000. Alvin was second with $3,800 and Laura was last with $3,400.

Round 2: Alvin found the first Daily Double in “Books about Writers” under the $2,000 clue. He was in second place with $7,800, $4,200 less than Dave’s lead. He bet $3,000 and guessed St. Patrick. That was WRONG.

Dave found the last Daily Double in “Time to Go Explorin'” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $13,200, he had $5,200 more than Alvin in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Dave finished in the lead with $16,200. Alvin was next with $13,200 and Laura was in third place with $11,400.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS JOHN F. KENNEDY?

John F. Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th President of the United States on January 20, 1961. Barack Obama was born on August 4th of the same year. In the interim, Jackie Kennedy embarked upon her extensive plans to remodel the White House.

Well, that about covers it, doesn’t it?

Laura picked LBJ. She didn’t bet anything so she remained at $11,400.

Alvin thought it was Eisenhower. He bet any lost everything.

Dave came up with Ike, too. He lost his $10,201 bet and wound up in second place with $5,999, and Laura Lorson is the new champ.

Laura is a newscaster on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” During the chat, Alex was amazed to learn that she is also a Kentucky colonel because he didn’t know that women could be Kentucky colonels. (Are your ears ringing, Alex?) Laura, a Louisville native, said that her mother and grandmother also held the title so bestowing the honor on the women had to go back at least to the 1950s.

    easiest FJ clue ever

    *shakes head*

  2. VJ says:

Here is a list of of presidents born in the 20th century.

    1900s – LBJ (1908)
    1910s – Reagan (1911), Nixon (1913), Ford (1913), JFK (1917)
    1920s – George H. W. Bush (1924), Jimmy Carter (1924)
    1940s – George W. Bush (1946), Bill Clinton (1946)
    1960s – Barack Obama (1961)

@John, you’re making a jump here that you didn’t make in CotD — they didn’t ask who was president in 1961. This was definitely not a no-brainer. You had to either know Obama’s year of birth or be close enough in your guess of his age to come up with JFK, and in the CotD, you even mentioned the possibilities of Ike and LBJ.

    • Cece says:

I think the contestants just didn’t know Obama’s exact age, so they weren’t way off in their answers. Overall, a good game, albeit a FJ TS. 🙂

      • VJ says:

Yes, overall it was a good game. I really wanted Alvin to win and was like — Go Alvin — when he went on his little catch up streak. Did you notice how Alex brought up his being in the red yesterday AGAIN in the beginning? Alex sure likes to beat that “you were in the red” horse to death.

Oh well, Alvin had a great payday from his one appearance and made a bit more than Dava-Leigh’s $31,501 from 3 wins!!

        • Cece says:

Me too, I was rooting for Alvin (he’s just a cool guy) and I was afraid he was gonna Roger Craig that DD and miss it. Well, he only lost the $3K. No, I didn’t hear Alex in the beginning — I was in the kitchen trying to finish making my pasta. Just as well; I find it annoying when Alex does that. 🙂

BTW, the little boy in the video is so adorable!

        • VJ says:

If you saw the chat segment, then you probably figured that Trebek would tell Alvin all about the time he went sky-diving after the show. LOL!

Yeah, I got such a kick out of that video, I might get or make a birthday cake for the March presidents: Jackson (15) Madison (16) Cleveland (18) Tyler (29)

        • Cece says:

LOL! Yes, and then remind Alvin that he was in the red yesterday.

For the March presidents, maybe you can have a séance and invite them over to eat the cake. And freak out your cat, lol!

        • VJ says:

LOL!! I’m sure if they all showed up it would freak me out more than the cat!

    • john blahuta says:

as i said, it was easier for me. obama was born in hawaii and with his birth certificate in the news all the time i automatically figured that his dob was common knowledge. it was hashed through the media just about 1000000000000 times.

  3. VJ says:

@John, well, I guess 2 was too optimistic after all. But it was one of those you either know it or you don’t situations.

I really thought Laura would be the only one to get it and win. But she won all the same. Hanging on to all the $$ turned out to be the smart move.

    • john blahuta says:

pollock gets 3 solves. who was president in 1961 :ZERO!! i went with 2 in my prediction, the thought “maybe one, but this is such a no-brainer”, so i stuck with 2 instead of going to one. even that would have been giving the players to much credit.
american history: big fat F!and even rather recent history when you measure in historic terms.50+ years is not barely the blink of an eye.
btw, j made a mistake in the last dd: the explorer’s name was juan sebastian elcano, NOT del cano! (it is not exactly the correct spelling, but means ..of the gray hair in spanish..):):) although magellan is credited with the circumnavigation of the earth, he never finished it, he got killed in the philippines, so he could hardly be honored by king charles I (of spain). he was already rotting away on the other side of the world…

      • john blahuta says:

with lbj and ike they were at least close. still… you probably read my comments in the CotD talk.
seriously, how much easier can it get??

you can ask for a complete amateur in “literature” and get 3 solves. just out of curiosity, vj, how would you rate thompson??

      • VJ says:

idk what your beef is with that Thompson FJ question. I’m not a fan of his, but I don’t see what’s so horrible about the players knowing that. Lots of times we have said they need to have more current material for this generation of players, then when they do that, people get mad. Like the lady complaining about the female writers in yesterday’s clues.

My opinion on both is it sure beats the Seven Dwarfs category.

        • john blahuta says:

i absolutely agree with the 7 dwarfs. i just think that thompson is not exactly fj material. but that’s just me.

        • VJ says:

well, it’s interesting that you say that. At this point, any FJ that’s NOT Thoreau, Whitman, Shakespeare, Twain, Hugo, Verne, Dickens, Poe, etc – (same old same old) – works for me.

      • VJ says:

PS – You’re right so I fixed Elcano. funny I actually checked the spelling on wikipedia and saw that it said Elcano but didn’t change it.

I was a little distracted during the show, trying to prevent the cat from tearing up the lining in my lampshade. He won.

  4. William Weyser says:

Not a big payday as Monday and yesterday was, but we’ll see if Laura can win more than $11,400 tomorrow.
