WHAT IS PIUS?

Leo and Pius are two 20th century papal names that are the same in English and Latin but Pius was the most recent. Here are the English and regnal (Latin) names of the 20th century popes:

Leo (Leo) – Leo XIII (from 1878-1903) was the first pope born in the 19th century and first to die in the 20th.
Pius (Pius) – there were 3 in the 20th century, the X (St. Pius X), the XI and the XII. Pius XII was pope from 1939 to 1958. He canonized Pius X.
Benedict (Benedictus) – Benedict XV (from 1914-1922)
John (Ioannes) – John XXIII (from 1958-1963)
Paul (Paulus) – Paul VI (from 1963-1978)
John Paul (Ioannes Paulus) – the first Pope to choose this name only reigned for 33 days in 1978; the second reigned from 1978 to 2005.

Eli thought it was Paul. He lost his $4,700 bet and finished with $100.

Christiane thought it was John. She lost $5,998, leaving her with $2.00.

Rebecca came up with Leo. She lost $3,700, winning the match with the $12,100 she had left. Her 2-day total is $43,300.

btw, I meant to mention that we used to work with a realtor down here whose name is Pius. Also, on the Nickname site, there’s a poker champ, a philologist and a politician, all named Pius, and I have a list of the real first names of the Popes who chose that name. Fun stuff to know 🙂

  2. VJ says:

I know they only wanted the name today, but here’s one time in 1991 that Pius XII was an FJ triple stumper and, wow, they didn’t give the players much to go on that time.

This shouldn’t have been a very tough final but still there were a few triple stumpers in the main round. How did these guys not know about nelson mandela? Johannasburg should have been the correct answer. Did alex misspoke about that?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, Alex gave the right answer. Johannesburg isn’t one of the 3 South African capitals and it was one of the wrong answers given. The other wrong answers were the judicial and administrative capitals. (LINK)

For sure I expected a Triple Get but what do I know from predictions! Such an easy FJ!

  5. rhonda says:

I’m surprised that this FJ was a triple stumper.
The clue about MOMA wasn’t quite correct, it isn’t on 5th Ave, it’s between 5th and 6th Aves.
