Final Jeopardy: Other Political Parties (3-20-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/20/2014), in the category “Other Political Parties” was:

In 1908 this animal appropriately became the mascot of the Prohibition Party.

New champ Gabor Revy won $24,801 in yesterday’s game. In his second game, his opponents are: Brendan Getzell, from San Francisco, CA; and Diane Levinson, from Astoria, NY.

Round 1: Brendan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “World of Music” under the $600 clue. He was in second place with $2,200, $1,800 less than Diane’s lead. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

Diane finished in the lead with $7,200. Brendan was second with $6,800 and Gabor was last with $1,800.

Round 2: Brendan found the first Daily Double in “Labor Unions” under the $1,600 clue. He was in the lead with $12,000, $1,000 more than Gabor in second place. Brendan said “let’s make it a true $800” and he was RIGHT. He got a laugh, but more money would have been better.

Robert Montgomery and Ronald Reagan each served 2 stints as president of this. show

Gabor found the last Daily Double in “The 2nd Century” under the $800 clue. In the lead with $13,400, he had $600 more than Brendan in second place. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

This Roman emperor visited Britain in 122 A.D. & had some ideas for military construction. show

Gabor finished in the lead with $14,400. Brendan was next with $12,800 and Diane was in third place with $10,800.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS A CAMEL?

“Influential political cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840-1902), he who gave the elephant to be the symbol of the Republican Party and the donkey for that of the Democratic Party, also gave the camel to the Prohibition Party. Nast drew for Harper’s Weekly during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Nast chose the camel to represent the Prohibition Party because, like Prohibitionists generally, camels don’t drink very often, and, when they do drink, they drink only water. Originally a dromedary, the symbol was later changed to the Bactrian camel in order not to be associated with a logo on a certain brand of cigarettes. ” (Prohibition Party Background)

Worthpoint.com has an anti-Prohibition beer mug (c. 1925) on auction that says: “A camel can go 8 days without a drink, but who wants to be a camel?”

Diane got it right and bet $6,000. She finished with $16,800.

Brendan thought it was a bull. That cost him $12,700 so he finished with $100.

Gabor thought it was a tiger. He lost his $5,601 bet and wound up with $8,799.

A crazy game with Gabor pretty much tanking in the first round, while Brendan and Diane played strong. Then Gabor rebounded while Brendan continued to play strong and Diane dropped back a little — but not too far, as you can see, to prevent her from becoming the new Jeopardy champ!

    ps
    after looking at it again:
not that it mattered, since gabor was wrong, but his bet should have been 11.201…but he WAS guarding against DIANE instead of brendan,(so it made SOME sense) if he disregarded brendan… the #2. what possessed him??? he must have draw a complete blank or was convinced diane might get it, but certainly not brendan- he didn’t- but the leader guarding against#3 instead of #2????had brendan and gabor been right, gabor would have lost, being in the lead. really strange……

haven’t seen it yet, but if the numbers are correct, as i presume: WHAT WAS GABOR SMOKING??????? that bet does not make sense in ANY direction.

as for the game: i think the dd clues were very easy (especially “yanni” and re: to hadrian’s wall, and everybody knows that the gipper was a b movie actor before entering politics…
even fj made sense, whether you drink (alcohol) or not. since dromedary and bactrian are both of the species camel, i guess they would have accepted either of the 2, especially the dromedary, since it was the first design. even i knew that and i have about 1 drink every other year….
