Final Jeopardy: British Authors (3-18-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/14/2014), in the category “British Authors” was:

The author of more than 50 books, he won 6 Hugo Awards & was nominated for a 1968 Oscar.

New champ Gordon Graham won $28,800 yesterday. Today he takes on these two players: Nora Morrison, from Cleveland, OH; and Nick Durazo, originally from Visalia, CA.

Round 1: Nick found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The French” under the $400 clue on the second pick of the round. He had $200 and no one else had any money. Nixing the chance to go with the $1000 allowance, he went with a true Daily Double bet and he was RIGHT.

Nick finished in the lead with $8,600. Nora was second with $1,400 and Gordon was in the hole at minus $200.

Round 2: Nick found the first Daily Double in “State Songs” under the $800 clue. He was in the lead with $12,600, $8,800 more than Nora in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Nora found the last Daily Double in “The Old Testament” under the $2,000 clue. In second place with $6,200, she had $10,200 less than Nick’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and thought it was Jonah. That was WRONG.

Nick finished in the lead with $16,800. Gordon was next with $10,200. Nora had minus $2,000 so she was out of the game. (She was already out of the game with $0 before she took a shot at the last clue on the board.)

BOTH of the remaining contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ARTHUR C. CLARKE?

“Science fiction icon Arthur C. Clarke was one of the world’s best-selling authors of science fiction and was widely considered one of the masters of the genre. Deemed on par with authors like Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein, he was especially identified with his novels Childhood’s End, Rendezvous with Rama, and 2001: A Space Odyssey” He shared an Oscar nomination with Stanley Kubrick for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay for 2001: A Space Odyssey. (Arthur C. Clarke.net)

Gordon bet it all and finished with $20,400.

Nick bet $3,601 and won the match with $20,401.

So we once again have a new champ and that is Nick Durazo. Gordon got off to a slow start and did do a good job of catching up (Nick was $14,600 ahead of him at one point), but Nick was a steady and strong player. Tune in tomorrow to see if he is the one to break the current one-day champ trend.

On Celebrity Relatives, we couldn’t believe this was a triple stumper: “No, it isn’t J.R. and Miss Ellie, but this actor and his mom, Broadway star Mary Martin. We thought J.R. and Larry Hagman were practically synonyms.
