Final Jeopardy: 20th Century Books (3-17-17)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/17/2017) in the category “20th Century Books” was:

William Goldman asked his daughters what he should write about; they said these 2 things, which he combined.

3x champ Grant McSheffrey has won $69,201 so far. He’ll be coming back on Monday if he can defeat these two players: Holly Stewart, from Atlanta, GA; and Rebecca Wald, from Baltimore, MD.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE PRINCESS BRIDE?

Mental Floss has a list of Facts About The Princess Bride. No. 1 says: “William Goldman … told Entertainment Weekly that, “I had two little daughters, I think they were 7 and 4 at the time, and I said, ‘I’ll write you a story. What do you want it to be about?’ One of them said ‘a princess’ and the other one said ‘a bride.’ I said, ‘That’ll be the title.'”

William Goldman got the ideas for his other works, like “Marathon Man” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” somewhere else. He also adapted many other authors’ works to the big screen, like Stephen King’s “Misery.” Check out his long list of credits on IMDB.

Grant wrote down “Lord and Flies.” As Alex pointed out, that was Golding. He lost his $2,401 bet and finished with $4,799.

Holly came up with rabbits & mice. She lost $9,601, leaving her with $5,799.

Rebecca got it right. She bet $11,000 bringing her up to $31,200 and making her the new Jeopardy! champ. See you Monday, Rebecca, and you too, we hope.

    J! Archive is back up!

  2. Mike says:

I think the answer she gave in final jeopardy was incorrect. The question specifically asked for two things, not the name of the book. The correct question is “what are princesses and brides?” ..

Hi Mike, It’s Friday, so we can’t look at what Jeopardy! writes down under “View Response” on their Clue of the Day page till Monday, when they put the next clue up.

The category was 20th Century Books, though. If that isn’t enough to make the book title itself good, it did have both words in it. Also, I doubt if the kids asked for plural princesses and brides, but I’d bet either “princesses & brides”or “a princess & a bride” would have been acceptable.

      • Mike says:

Ok, thanks for your reply. I agree that it’s a response that demonstrates the knowledge asked for in the clue. Cheers

        • VJ says:

You’re welcome, Mike. I will post what they have on Monday here.

Sometimes, I think they are inconsistent in their rulings. For example, in the Feb 7th game, they were only looking for “the Western Front” on the 2nd DD, but Jody gave the book title. I have what Alex said as a note in the spoiler: “You gave us the title of the book and the correct response is ‘the Western Front. You included the correct information. That’s right.”

But in the category “Movie Before, TV After” on 3/3, Rob Liguori got dinged for extra info on his answer to this clue “Plantation-set Disney film about Kyle, Cartman & their animated friend.” First he said “Song of the South Park movie,” then amended that to “Song of the South Park, Bigger Longer and Uncut”. So the category did count in that instance. It had to be the TV title without any extra info.

Ultimately, it’s their show and it’s up to their judges, not what I think. lol!!

UPDATE: The FJ response on Jeopardy.com is “What are a princess & a bride?”

I finally got my wish for the leader tonight.

    • VJ says:

Yup and the only one to get it to boot. I was thinking the same as Myron, that at least 2 would get it. I was thinking that the daughters part of the clue would at least trigger the princess part of the answer. Fairy tales are chock full of princesses.

I got a kick out of that $2000 clue in Warner Bros: “In a line of succession, husband-wise, this Virginia politician followed Richard Burton & Richard Burton.” No need to name the bride. LOL!

I was shocked by the Tony Bennett triple miss though. Tony got more mileage out of that song than most people get out of all their cars put together 🙂

Do you know what happened to the Jeopardy! archive website?

      • VJ says:

Myron said it was down for retooling on Friday’s Spoiler Talk with “no set timeline for its return.”

        • Kevin says:

The archive seems to be back up as of Sunday the 19th, but the J! discussion board still returns a “site not found” error. Glad you’re still up and running, VJ!

        • Kevin says:

JBoard still returns “site not found,” but I’ve seen other comments indicating it’s back up. Is it me/my computer, or is the site still off-line? Thanks.

        • VJ says:

@Kevin, I just tried it and it is up. Try clearing your browser’s cache if refreshing the page when you are on it doesn’t work.

        • Kevin says:

Thanks for the tip, VJ. Unfortunately, clearing everything from the history didn’t help. I still get the “site not found” message using either Firefox or Explorer. Will continue to research. Thanks for the help — I hope I can get back on soon; my episode airs tomorrow night and it would be fun to view any resulting discussions.

        • VJ says:

Glad you were able to figure that out, Kevin, and thanks for letting us know about tomorrow’s game so we can root for you. 🙂

        • Kevin says:

Sorry, I “misspoke” in the previous note. The error message is actually, “Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at ….” or “This page can’t be displayed” in Explorer. All other web sites seem to operating normally. Sigh. Ain’t technology grand?

      • Kevin says:

And yet another comment to clutter you board. Sorry about that, VJ. Please feel free to delete any or all of these. I found the problem; the URL must have dropped the HTTPS that was in the bookmark and went to just HTTP. I’m back on. Thanks!
