Final Jeopardy: The Oscars (3-1-17)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/1/2017) in the category “The Oscars” was:

Jimmy Stewart starred in 3 of the 6 films for which this Italian immigrant was nominated for Best Director.

New champ Rob Liguori won $19,601 yesterday. In his second game, his opponents are: Kate Edwards, from Venice, CA; and Joe Friedman, from Charlotte, NC.

Round 1 Categories: Take Me Out to the Classical Music Game – Health & Medicine – Cliches – A Small College – Objects – Standup, Sitcom

Joe found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Cliches” under the $600 clue on the 18th pick of the round. He was in second place with $800, $3,400 less than Rob’s lead. He made it true Daily Double, rather than the $1,000 allowance, and he was RIGHT.

Namor Mention: Alex Trebek said the Sub-Mariner was his favorite comic book character when he talked to Joe about his 25,000+ comic book collection. Oh, yeah? Then how come the Sub-Mariner never gets a clue?

Rob finished in the lead with $4,800. Joe was second with $3,400 and Kate was last with $1,600.

Round 2 Categories: The Fruits of Labor – Literary Title Characters – The Great Depression – Color That Flag! – Sports Cars? – Plus “C”

Kate found the first Daily Double in “Literary Title Characters” under the $1,600 clue, with only 5 clues left after it. She was in third place with $3,200 at this point, $15,600 behind Rob’s lead. She bet $3,000 but did not have a guess so she was WRONG.

2 clues later, Kate found the last Daily Double in “Color That Flag” under the $1,200 clue. She only had $200 now and decided to risk that and not go for the $2,000 allowance. One of her colors was WRONG.

Rob finished with a runaway $20,400. Joe was next with $5,800 and Kate, at zero, was now out of the game.

BOTH contestants left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHO IS FRANK CAPRA?

The 3 films Frank Capra directed that starred Jimmy Stewart were: “You Can’t Take It With You” (1938), “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939) and “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946). Each film earned him a Best Director nomination but he only won for the 1938 film. He already had 1 nomination: “Lady for a Day” (1933) and 2 wins: “It Happened One Night” (1934) and “Mr. Deed Goes to Washington (1936). See all Frank Capra awards on IMDB.

Oscar Embarrassment: At the 1934 ceremonies, Capra mistakenly thought he won Best Director for “Lady for a Day” when he was up against Frank Lloyd (“Cavalcade”). Presenter Will Rogers opened the envelope and said: “Come and get it, Frank.” Capra got up and headed toward the stage before realizing Rogers meant Lloyd.

Joe didn’t bet anything so he remained at $5,800.

Rob didn’t bet anything either since he already won the match. His 2-day total is $40,001.

This is the second time in a row that we have seen a player not making it into final jeopardy. This reminds me of the Kristin Sausville game where she was the only player in final jeopardy,.don’t you agree VJ?

    • VJ says:

That was a wild game, Lou, but in that one, Kristin didn’t get FJ right. In this game and yesterday, the 2 who were left got FJ. We could say that Kristin had a runaway, though. :):)

It has happened before where we have 2 days in a row with 1 of the players finished in the red, or with no money, and won’t be around for Final Jeopardy. In 2005, during Back To School Week, a.k.a. Kids Week, 2 days in a row, 1 of the kids was in the red, and was not around for Final Jeopardy. On Monday, a contestant named Pranita Ramakrishnan was just up against 2 buzzer demons, and Tuesday, a contestant named Brady Newell, did well in the Jeopardy round, but her ship kind of sunk big time in the Double Jeopardy! round with lots of misses, and lots of mispronunciations. In 2012, 1 player named Christy Gibson did well in the Jeopardy! round, but like Brady, her ship sunk big time in the Double Jeopardy! round, with lots of misses, and the following day, 1 of the 3 Jennifer Morgan’s that was on Jeopardy!, was in the red for almost the entire game.

Was I the only one that thought it was weird that they had the Oscar as an answer to a clue and then later it was the FJ? And they also had May Day in a clue and as an answer
