Final Jeopardy: The Universe

The Final Jeopardy question (2/28/2013), in the category “The Universe” was:

In 2006 it was moved to a new list that includes Ceres & Eris.

We have our first new regular champion since January today and she is Sara Garnett who picked up $25,601 when she defeated a 5x champion yesterday. Her opponents today are: Twyla Dignan, from West Linn, OR and Dean Flagg, from Los Angeles, CA.

Dean found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Trains.” He was in the lead with $6,600, $3,200 ahead of Sara in second place. He bet $2,000 but didn’t seem to know. He took a shot with Trans-Continental but that was WRONG.

Chartered in 1859, the RR we know by the names of these 3 places didn’t get to the New Mexico capital until 1880.

Dean finished in the lead with $6,000. Sara was second with $4,000 and Twyla was last with $2,400.

Sara found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Party Hopping.” She was now in second place with $5,600, only $400 behind Dean’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

This late Pennsylvanian, once a Democrat, was elected to the Senate for the GOP, then switched back in 2009.

Dean got the very last clue and the last Daily Double in “The Spain! The Spain!” He was now in second place with $16,400 and he was now only $400 behind Sara’s lead. He bet $2,500 He thought it was Castile and León but that was WRONG.

After uniting their hearts, Ferdinand & Isabella united these 2 Spanish kingdoms in 1479.

Sara finished in the lead with $16,800. Dean was next with $13,900 and Twyla was in third place with $8,400.

As you no doubt anticipated, ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right. It’s a little disappointing when the FJ is easier than the DDs.

WHAT IS PLUTO?

“From its time of discovery in 1930 to 2006 it was considered to be the ninth planet in the solar system, but because additional objects have been discovered including Eris which is 27% more massive, the IAU (International Astronomical Union) reclassified Pluto and the other objects as dwarf planets.” (Solar Views.com: Dwarf Planet Pluto)

Twyla didn’t bet anything so she finished with the same $8,400 she started with.

Dean bet $12,500, finishing with $26,400.

Sara bet $11,001, so she prevailed once again with a total today of $27,801. Her 2-day total is $53,402 and we will, of course, see her again tomorrow.
