Final Jeopardy: 2014 Events (2-23-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/23/2015), in the category “2014 Events” was:

To prepare venues hosting this event, 12 billion perennial ryegrass seeds were imported from Manitoba, 5,000 miles away.

New champ Dava-Leigh Brush won $1,500 in a surprise finish to Friday’s match. She returns today to face these two challengers: Britt Harter, from Dorchester, MA; and Gemma Kaneko, from Rochester, MI.

Round 1: Gemma found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Harlequin Romance Novel Titles 2014” under the $800 clue, with only one clue left after it. She was in third place with $1,600, $5,600 less than Britt’s lead. She bet $600 and she was RIGHT.

That finished the round and we didn’t get to see the last clue. Britt finished in the lead with $7,200. Dava-Leigh was second with $2,600 and Gemma was last with $2,200.

Round 2: Gemma found the first Daily Double in “A ‘Little’ Literature” under the $2,000 clue. She was now in second place with $4,600, $1,400 less than Britt’s lead. She bet $2,000 and thought it was “A Little Piece of Heaven.” That was WRONG.

WHAT IS THE WORLD CUP?

The official grass seed supplier for the 2014 FIFA World Cup was supplied by Pickseed, a grass company in Manitoba, Canada. Terry Scott, vice-president of Western Canada sales for Pickseed, a grass company in Manitoba, Canada. “‘Choosing the proper seed variety for the soccer pitches is the first step,’ says Scott. The grass used in for the World Cup in Brazil is a perennial ryegrass. That’s not Brazil’s usual soccer grass… Brazil’s typical Bermuda grass goes dormant [during July] and turns brown — which wouldn’t look very good on television. But ryegrass, says Scott, is an ‘aggressive grass, and it’s a grass that we can successfully grow with our seed production farmers up here in Manitoba, Canada.’ Each of Brazil’s 12 World Cup fields were grown from more than a billion perennial ryegrass seeds, says Scott.” (PRI: That great-looking grass at the World Cup…)

Gemma wrote down “Whiskey Festival”. She bet and lost everything.

Dava-Leigh got it right. Her $4,201 bet brought her up to $10,001.

Britt came up with Wimbledon. That only cost him $1,601 but it lowered his score to $8,399. Dava-Leigh remained champ. She now has a 2-day total of $11,501.

FJ Results: 2-23-15

During the chat, Dava-Leigh talked about the temporary band-aid engagement ring she got, with a diamond drawn on it, when her husband proposed.

Well, I see Dava-Leigh kissed some object hanging around her neck and mouthed what I guess was a prayer and looked above, so she thinks her winning is due to prayer and luck (and so far, I’ll be damned, it sure seems to be!) — but a day will come when all of that won’t work, isn’t that strange?

Or maybe she’s onto something and her system will continue to provide her with the stupid wagerers and competitors she’s been getting and she’ll NEVER lose!

I guess I’m weird. I always thought you won the game by being knowledgable, smart, fast on the buzzer and knowing how to wager correctly. And here, all this time, it’s due to some material object one hangs around one’s neck. Where can I get one of those things?

Maybe Alex will ask her about it during the chat tomorrow and you’ll find out.

I don’t know about you, but I prefer another day of Dava-Leigh to more zany spontaneity from Gemma.

    • NK says:

You didn’t know? That object has Bluetooth.

    • Dava-Leigh Brush says:

Just for the record, the object hanging around my neck was a necklace that my father gave my mother. She wore it more often than not for 35 years. I watched Jeopardy with my momma when I was a very little girl, back in the Art Fleming days, and I watched it often with them once it came back. My dad knew that I’d tried out for Jeopardy and we watched the show every day while he was in Hospice and he talked about “when” I got on the show. I didn’t even realize I’d grabbed my necklace until I watched my episodes. I guess it was my way of saying “Hi Momma and Daddy” to them since they both passed away within the last 5 years. That’s all that it meant.

    What a strange game…

What was the clue that stumped all 3 players for which the answer was ‘mammal?” (I didn’t catch the clue, only the answer).

@John, now I know why Germany shellacked Brazil at the WC — it was all about the grass! LOL! :):):)

    • VJ says:

3M $600 – The shrewlike morganucodon was one of the first of this animal class.

      Dava-Leigh – What is a marmoset?
      Gemma – What is mammoth?
Britt – What is a mastodon?

Gemma exclaimed “That’s not even a…” after her incorrect response, then I guess she remembered she wasn’t at home.

I don’t think this was the category that made me switch off the sound, though. I think that was 17-letter Words. Quel désastre!

      • Cece says:

Thanks, VJ. “…switch off the sound.” LOL!

I’d venture to say that most of the game was a disaster. I hope it doesn’t set the tone for the rest of the week.

But I have to hand it to Dava-Leigh tough; a hard and small win, but a win all the same.

        • VJ says:

yeah, I was glad she won. I won’t swear to it, but I think she took at least one less bad guess than the other two. hahaha. j/k

that game was unbelievable!! 7:1 at home… i was furious. though i am from austria and speak german, i do NOT like the germans very much, there is no love lost between austrians and germans. and especially in football. they are really arrogant and conceited, like “we are the best, always”. austria is unfortunately always drawn into one qual. group with them, whether that’s euro or wc. ah well, my favorite european teams are barcelona and liverpool.

    • Cece says:

And Gemma wins for perkiness. O. M. G.

  3. Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

Gemma’s FJ response cracked me up!

    • VJ says:

yes, Marilyn, now I will have Tex Ritter lyrics stuck in my head for 2 days —

Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cry
If a tree don’t fall on me, I’ll live till I die

    • john blahuta says:

strange that the lady i thought had the least chance got it right and won AGAIN with a slightly unconventional bet.but she was also right in presuming that the others would strike out.
the whole thing begs just one question: HOW MUCH EASIER CAN IT GET????
henri is absolutely right. we are STILL isolationists. that showed before pearl harbor when 92% were against any involvement in wwII. after dec. 7, 1941 the same 92% and more were FOR going to war, but only against japan. what most did not know – however fdr did!!!- was that because of the “pact of steel” germany and italy HAD to declare war on us as soon as we declared war on japan. hence the fact that fdr pressured japan until their backs were to the wall and the rumors that fdr KNEW about the impending attack. it was the only way to stop hitler. had the u.s. not already helped britain before ’41 with “surplus” planes and ships britain would have succumbed, hitler would have had his back free and what used to be the ussr would speak german in the western part and japanese in the eastern part today. what fdr did was “treason for a reason”. and he was right. imo the best president we had and at the right time.

coming back to j: the totals before fj were not exactly too impressive either.

    • john blahuta says:

there is such a thing as rye whiskey…:):)
