Final Jeopardy: Presidential Campaign Years (2-22-17)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/22/2017) in the category “Presidential Campaign Years” was:

Year The New York World lamented, “The age of statesmen is gone… the age of rail-splitters and tailors… has succeeded”

In the last semi-final of the 2017 College Championship. The players with one last chance to make the finals are: Gary Tse a U.S. Naval Academy freshman; Netanel Paley, a Yeshiva Univ. senior; and Mari Hanley, a Stetson Univ. junior.

Round 1 Categories: Essay Test – Financial Literacy – What’s That Song? – Middle I – On to Grad School – I’m With Her

Gary found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Financial Literacy” under the $1,000 clue, with only one clue left after it. He was in the lead with $5,400, $200 more than Mari in second place. Not feeling too confident in the category, he only bet $5.00. Good thing because he thought it was Glass & Steagall and that was WRONG.

Gary finished in the lead with $5,395. Mari was second with $5,200 and Netanel was last with $2,600.

Round 2 Categories: “S.A.” Test – Leonardo DiCaprio Movies – Holidays & Observances – Element-ium – Poets & Poetry – All Aboot Canadian Geography

Mari found the first Daily Double in “Holidays & Observances” under the $2,000 clue on the 13th pick. She was in second place with $8,000 at this point, $5,395 behind Gary’s lead. She bet $5,000 and she was RIGHT.

Techically, June 17 in Massachusetts should be called Breed’s Hill Day instead of this. show

Netanel found the last Daily Double in “Element-ium” under the $1,200 clue, with 6 clues left after it. In third place with $8,600, he had $9,595 less than Gary’s lead. He bet $6,000 and he was RIGHT.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS 1864?

The New York World was referring to former occupations of the 16th President and his 1864 running mate, Andrew Johnson. The June 9, 1864 editorial derided them as follows: “The age of statesmen is gone; the age of rail-splitters and tailors, of buffoons, boors and fanatics, has succeeded. Mr Lincoln and Mr Johnson are both men of mediocre talents, neglected education, narrow views, deficient information, and coarse vulgar manners.” The entire article is online in “Hearings Before the Special Committee,” Vol. 1 (1919)

See the Miller Center for an article on why Lincoln wanted Andrew Johnson as his running mate in 1864, instead of his then-VP, Hannibal Hamlin.

Mari wrote down 1816. That cost her $10,000 and she finished with $5,000.

Netanel thought it was 1876. He bet and lost everything.

Gary had the same response as Netanel. He only bet $7,006 so he won the last finalist spot with $15,989. Gary will be competing with Lilly Chin and Viraj Mehta in the next 2 matches.

I am for Lily Chin winning.

  2. TaiwanBill says:

I think Lily Chin has the best chance of winning. She is super fast and quick witted.
For me a very easy FJ tonight. Andrew Johnson is one of my favorite presidents. The only southern senator who did not bolt the Union. Helped pass the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. Backed Seward to buy Alaska, which might still be Russian if the Union had lost the Civil War. His wife taught him how to read and write. A terrific tailor too, by all accounts. Must have been a fantastic speaker.

  3. William Weyser says:

Lilly, Gary & Viraj, good luck in the finals.

  4. Dalton Higbee says:

I feel bad that all three were wrong on Final despite all three doing so well.

    • VJ says:

@Dalton, all I can say is they must not show students pictures of Lincoln with his axe anymore. It was quite common way back when. And this FJ made me want to get a set of Lincoln Logs for my grandkids. Maybe next Christmas. They’ll just throw them around now.

@Richard, As I said, I’m hoping Lilly wins. But I do think we’re gonna see a buzzer battle and some furious DD hunting :0

        Or on a 2009 penny.
Or the classic movie Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer.
I expected to see an 1860 in the answers, but the clue to Lincoln seemed easy

    Go Navy. Beat Army.

  6. Lou says:

Two nights in a row with no correct final jeopardy responses. Also I m certain that Gary’s play style is similar to Andrew Pau. Imagine him going up against Andrew in the tournament of champions later on. You would love to see that, won’t you, VJ?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I would like to see the 2 college champions go up against Jason Sterlacci, the Teachers Tournament champion, and see who gets schooled 😉

      (Just kidding)

  7. Fred Light says:

Hard questions, for me, tonight. Time to hit the books.

    • EricS says:

Never a bad idea. Idk your academic level, but please remember that this a higher level of academic elites. Learning is good, but stress is not.

  8. VJ says:

Gary sure is quick with the buzzer. Still, I’m leaning toward Lilly to win it all. 🙂

An interesting thing I came across about The New York World was that Joseph Pulitzer bought it in 1883 and he later offered Jefferson Davis’ widow, Varina, a writing job that she accepted. In New York City, she and Julia Grant became good friends.

Do you think Gary is going to win on Friday? Because remember what happened last time with six females and 3 males we were so close to have an all girl game. I’m hoping Lilly will win cause she is super fast.
