Final Jeopardy: The British Empire (2-21-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/21/2014), in the category “The British Empire” was:

1713’s Treaty of Utrecht concluding the war of the Spanish succession granted this small 2.3-sq.mi. area to Great Britain.

The finale of the 2014 College Championship has arrived at last. Terry O’Shea won $19,800 yesterdayTucker Pope won $14,800; and Kevin Shen won $8,765. Whatever they win today will be added to those amounts to determine who is taking home $100K and a trophy.

Tucker found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “”H”omonyms” under the $600 clue. He was in the lead with $2,200, $400 ahead of Terry in second place. He bet $1,200 and apparently forgot the category. He said “stall” and that was WRONG.

Terry finished in the lead with $4,600. Kevin was second with $3,400 and Tucker was last with $2,800.

Kevin found the first Daily Double in “Put it There” under the $1,600 clue. He was in second place with $4,600, $400 less than Terry’s lead. He bet $2,000 and guessed the Dept. of Defense. That was WRONG.

Kevin found the last Daily Double in “Figuring Out the Universe” under the $2,000 clue. He was in second place when he got it with $7,000, $6,200 behind Tucker’s lead. At this point, Terry was awarded $4,000 on an answer previously judged wrong, giving her $9,000 and moving Kevin to third place. Kevin said he was going to regret it, but he wanted to make it a true Daily Double. He thought the answer was “gamma” but that was WRONG.

Tucker finished in the lead with $13,200. Terry was right behind him with $13,000.

Kevin had no money to get into FJ with but, you know, it was a chance to catch up and he shouldn’t regret taking the chance at all. He might regret not zeroing in on the “Greek for universe” part of the clue.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS GIBRALTAR?

“During the War of the Spanish Succession in the early 18th century, Britain successfully invaded Gibraltar. In the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, Spain lost control of Gibraltar ‘for ever, without any exception or impediment whatsoever’. Despite this, Spain has never given up on its claims to the sovereignty of Gibraltar. ” (About.com: The Question of Gibraltar’s Sovereignty)

Terry got it right and added $5,000. She finished today with $18,000. Adding in her $19,800 from yesterday brought her up to $37,800.

Tucker thought it was Hong Kong (1842 Treaty of Nanking). He bet everything he had today, so he finished with yesterday’s total of $14,800.

Kevin already knew he was placing third with yesterday’s total of $8,795, so he is going home with $25K.

Tucker gets $50K for second place, and Terry O’Shea is the $100K grand prize winner.

Kudos to Terry for winning and for getting this FJ right. Go Princeton!

Have to agree about Latin and Greek. Not just for quiz shows. Victor Hugo would memorize 30 lines of Latin before falling asleep, as a schoolboy, and translate them into rhyming couplets when he woke up. He said the classics prepared him for adulthood. “For every eventuality, I had a Greek proverb, a classical allusion or a line from Virgil.”

….and as a final p.s.: when i saw the fj category on top of the page, i was already licking my chops… and then it turned out to be easy (for me at least) gibraltar was what saved europe from napoleon, being the naval base for the british and thus exercising control over the spanish and french navies, in the med, and atlantic. w/o gibraltar the complete blockade of europe, from st. petersburg to greece and the european part of turkey, would not have been possible. the “battle of aboukir” or “battle of the nile” crushed napoleons efforts to thrust into asia. the battles of trafalgar and the cape st. vicent followed, effectively giving the british navy complete control of the oceans -including the caribbean- and thus cutting off supplies to france but getting supplies at will for great britain. since napoleon’s army lived off the (conquered) land, this was what did him in eventually. it still took a while, but the british navy won the war against napoleon. the battles on land in the end – especially waterloo after the “100 days”- were just the exclamation points or the period after waterloo, if you will. rule brittania…..

I thought FJ was easy and at least two of them would get it. Spain > small > Gibraltar. (Didn’t think anyone would go out of Europe on it in any event)

kevin might have gotten it, but he was out of it by that point and had not even a chance to write anything down…??

terry took a terrible risk by betting only 5K. luckily for her she was the only one who got it right… wasn’t there some post a while ago that said how much smarter men are than women????? eat your words!! anyway, my prediction came true and for me as an anglophile and having studied british history A LOT it was a no-brainer.

CONGRATULATIONS TO TERRY, I HAD A FEELING SHE WOULD WIN.

I actually thought they were going to let Kevin bet in FJ on his winnings the day before when he was still on the panel during FJ.

well, it’s either all or nobody. they could try to integrate yesterday’s total in a 2 day affair, but it’s kind of a 50% pro and 50% con pov.
