Final Jeopardy: Word Origins (2-20-17)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/20/2017) in the category “Word Origins” was:

The first recorded use of this word in print was when Nathan Hope posted an image of his busted lip online in 2002.

The first semi-final match of the 2017 College Championship is coming up right now. Today’s players are: Julia Marsan, a senior at Georgetown; Lilly Chin, a senior at MIT; and Alex Bourzutschky, a junior at Caltech. They got the top 3 scores in the quarter-final matches.

Round 1 Categories: All in a Day’s Work – Art & Artists – Silent “K” – Math 4U – Named for a Place – Let’s Rap, Kids!

Julia found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Named for a Place” under the $400 clue with only 4 clues left after it. (All that earlier Daily Double hunting was for naught.) She was in second place with $4,400, $1,000 less than Lilly’s lead. She bet $1,400 and she was RIGHT.

Any place that attracts a lot of visitors can be called this, even if its not in Saudi Arabia. show

Round 2 Categories: President’s Day – Women Writers – Take a Peak – Flowers – British English – Putting the “R” in Entertainment

Julia found the first Daily Double in “Women Writers” under the $1,600 clue on the 12th pick. She was in second place with $8,200 at this point, $1,800 less than Lilly’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

In “Letter from Peking”, she wrote of an American woman separated from her Chinese-American husband. show

3 clues later, Lilly found the last Daily Double in “Flowers” under the $2,000 clue. In second place with $11,200, she had $1,000 less than Julia’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Julia finished in the lead with $18,200. Lilly was next with $14,800 and Alex was in third place with $12,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS A SELFIE?

Nathan Hope posted the photo of his busted lip in an Australian forum in 2002, explaining how it happened with this apology about its focus: “…it was a selfie.” In the ensuing years, the use of the term on social media, accompanied by photos people took of themselves, became so popular that the word came to the attention of lexicographers. Oxford Dictionaries chose it as 2013’s Word of the Year.

That entry was duly noted in a 12/12/2013 “New to the Oxford Dictionaries” $200 Jeopardy! clue: “A photograph that one has taken of oneself… with a smartphone… & uploaded to a social media website”

Alex wrote down “fatlip,” with no space between the words. He bet and lost it all.

Lilly got it right. She bet $8,001 and finished with $22,801.

Julia wrote down “swoll.” She lost her $8,200 bet, leaving her with $10,000. So Lilly Chin will be one of the finalists going for the grand prize on Thursday and Friday.

I didn’t get to see the show last night, but a friend told me there was a question involving the Adler Planetarium. Does anyone remember the question?

    • VJ says:

The clue was in the Art & Artists category and was worth $800:

The Henry Moore sundial seen here, “Man Enters the Cosmos,” greets visitors to this city’s Adler Planetarium.

Julia buzzed in with the right response.

Job well done lilly! Good luck to you in the finals of the jeopardy college championship. I’ve seen plenty of Selfies on facebook and other sites. The question is when was the word selfies first introduced, VJ

  3. VJ says:

Alex and Julia obviously were focusing on what was in the photo, though the expression “swoll” really has to do with being muscular. Trebek also expected all of them to get this one, remarking that the winner would be determined by the wagers. Then he took it back before revealing their answers.

I’m surprised only one of the three got Final right.

41/61 here. Interesting to note that Joanne Campbell posted two episodes of Jeopardy! on her Youtube page from September 1987 (at least the first one was), but I posted the first one and the episodes were taken down by the time I clicked on the second episode. Don’t know if Joanne took them off or Sony did. The first video ended as Alex was reading the FJ! clue.

Good job, Lilly! She looks so very shy when she wins.
