Final Jeopardy: World Landmarks (2-17-17)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/17/2017) in the category “World Landmarks” was:

Completed in 1884, the Washington Monument became the tallest manmade structure but 4 years later was surpassed by this.

The last Quarter-Final match of the 2017 College Championship and the players are: Zach Atwell, a senior at the Univ. of Kentucky; Julia Marsan, a senior at Georgetown; and Gary Tse, a freshman at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Alex Trebek called the match Decision Day. Only one player can win the last semi-finalist slot today, but the other two have a shot at a Wild Card. A complete list will be at the end of the recap.

Round 1 Categories: Serious Hardware – Health & Medicine – MTV Movie Award for Best Villain – Government Agencies – Geographer’s Dictionary – College Majors in Other Words

Gary found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Government Agencies” under the $800 clue with only one clue left after it. He was in second place with $4,200, $600 less than Julia’s lead. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Gary finished in the lead with $6,200. Julia was second with $3,800 and Zach was last with $2,400.

Round 2 Categories: Roamin’ Through Romania – African-American Authors – A Year Ending in 00 – “T” Time – Sociology – Groups

Julia found the first Daily Double in “African-American Authors” under the $1,200 clue on the 12th pick. She was in second place with $8,600 at this point, $800 behind Gary’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Gary found the last Daily Double in “Sociology” under the $2,000 clue. Only the “Groups” category was still on the board. In the lead with $19,800, he had $6,800 more than Julia in second place. He bet $1,845 (for the year the Naval Academy was founded?) and he was RIGHT.

Gary finished in the lead with $22,845. Julia was next with $15,400 and Zach was in third place with $6,400.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE EIFFEL TOWER?

According to A History of the World’s Tallest Structures on Kevin Muldoon’s blog, the Eiffel Tower was the 14th man-made structure to be recognized as the tallest in the world. On there, you can see what structure the Washington Monument surpassed and what surpassed the Eiffel Tower.

An old clue: This Daily Double from a 9/20/2002 Back to School Week match was in a “Starts with 2 Vowels” category: “Made of wrought iron, this world landmark, built in 1889, was once the world’s tallest structure.”

Zach bet it all and finished with $12,800.

Julia bet $9,000. That put her in the lead with $24,400.

Gary didn’t bet anything so Julia won the last semi-final spot. But no worries for Gary. He still got a Wild Card.

Number one, I was disappointed that Jennifer, Esteban and Corey didn’t make it. Number two, I notice since the 2014 Teen Tournament, except for the 2015 Tournament of Champions, that this the 7th overall two week tournament to feature the fifth quarterfinal game resulting with the wild card finishing with the highest non-winning score among all of the other wild-cards. And number three, this is the first Friday of 2017 that the leader in Final gets the question right.

  4. Lou says:

Congrats to the semifinalists and the wild card winners. One day I will have a chance to see the Eiffel tower up close. I would have loved to seen Allison score a little higher to keep that wildcard spot. Also when was the last time you were in franice, VJ

  5. VJ says:

Congrats to the semi-finalists and wild card winners, though technically there’s no distinction after today — they are all semi-finalists. Congrats to Jacob on your correct prediction, too.

Zach Atwell’s missing the last clue of DJ! probably cost him a wild card spot.

And Poor Allison is kicking herself for not wagering enough to possibly earn her a wild-card spot. Now, she gets to be in the position that no 1 wants to be in: The Alternate.
