The Final Jeopardy question (2/10/2017) in the category “Literary Characters” was:

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS SCARLETT O’HARA?

Popularly known as the Barbecue Dress, Scarlett O’Hara wore it in Chapter 1 of Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 novel, “Gone with the Wind,” at Tara and later at the Twelve Oaks barbecue: “Seated with Stuart and Brent Tarleton in the cool shade of the porch of Tara, her father’s plantation, that bright April afternoon of 1861, she made a pretty picture. Her new green flowered-muslin dress spread its twelve yards of billowing material over her hoops and exactly matched the flat-heeled green morocco slippers her father had recently brought her from Atlanta.”

Fun Fact: In the 1939 film, the Tarleton twins were played by Fred Crane, in his first film role, and George Reeves, in his fourth. Many roles and 13 years later, Reeves got his most famous role as Superman (and Clark Kent) in the popular 1950s “Adventures of Superman” TV series.

Sara got it right. She bet $4,799 and that brought her up to $9,599.

Kirstin also got it. She bet $5,000, finishing with $15,600.

Brandon wrote down “the Good Witch.” He lost his $7,201 bet, leaving him $6,799. That made Kirstin today’s winner. She remains the champ with a 3-day total of $41,202. We will see her next on February 27th, after we watch and recap the College Championship over the next 2 weeks.

Like most people I’ve never read GWTW, but I’ve had a copy for a couple of years now, and it’s near the top of my list to read this year. Maybe one day even its sequel “Scarlett” (by the Ripley lady) might make the list. It’s always fun to read about the movie, the making of it, the casting, et al.
There’s two basic reasons why I have to read it soon. One is I’m too old to wait much longer; and Two, I want to see if Margaret Mitchell mentions what the capital of Georgia actually was during the Civil War. Over 30 years ago I read a very nice collection by Flannery O’Connor who mentions that Milledgeville was the capital and Atlanta didn’t became the latest capital until 1868.

Hi, Taiwan Bill. Funny that you mentioned “Scarlett.” I was going to cite that as an example Thursday to amend my remark that I consider anything after the original story to be a sequel. I have never considered “Scarlett” to be a proper sequel to GWTW because it wasn’t written by Margaret Mitchell.

For that matter, I never thought Leslie Howard was the right pick for “a good-looking devil” like Ashley.

I hope you enjoy the book .

I was hoping we would have our first Friday with the leader getting final right. Maybe finally in the College Championship.

Final Jeopardy was an easy one, what happened Brandon???

    • VJ says:

Well, not everybody has seen the film or read the book these days. My daughter got it but only because we had the doll with the real green dress, the one Scarlett made out of Ellen’s green drapes before she went to see Rhett Butler at the jail. We also had the red dress doll, the one Rhett made Scarlett wear to the Wilkes house when Melanie was near death.

Alex reading that Chaka Khan clue was very funny. Since Chaka is a woman, she couldn’t fit in the Khan category.
