Final Jeopardy: Presidential Elections (12-7-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/7/2016) in the category “Presidential Elections” was:

1 of 2 states whose first-ever electoral votes were cast for Woodrow Wilson.

3x champ Tim Aten has now won $56,300. A big win today would get him a very nice spot with the 4x winners on the ToC list. His challengers are: Wendi Rottweiler, from South Brunswick, NJ; and Jaime Ryan, from San Marcos, CA.

Round 1 Categories: The Great Loop – Funny Ladies – Join the Conjunction – On the Money – Operation – Drugz

Tim found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “On the Money” under the $800 clue. There were 10 clues left after it. He was in the lead with $3,200, $1,400 more than Jamie in second place. He bet $1,200 and he was RIGHT.

Tim finished in the lead with $6,800. Jaime was second with $3,600 and Wendi was back at $0.

Round 2 Categories: The Room Where It Happens – Directors on Film – Alloys – Poetry – Nothing but Net – Let’s Call It a “Day”

Jaime found the first Daily Double in “Room Where It Happens” under the $2,000, with 3 whole categories still to go after it. He was in second place with $5,600 at this point, $3,300 behind Tim’s lead. He bet $3,400 and didn’t know so he said “room room.” Funny but WRONG.

The Ark of the Covenant was kept in the Temple of Solomon in a room with this repetitive name. show

3 clues later, Jaime found the last Daily Double in “Alloys” under the $1,600 clue. In second place with $2,600, he had $6,200 less than Tim’s lead. He bet $2,400, and this time, he was RIGHT.

From the Greek for “soften” it’s any alloy of mercury & another metal such as silver in dental fillings. show

Tim finished in the lead with a runaway $12,400. Jaime was next with $4,200 and Wendi was in third place with $2,800.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS ARIZONA or NEW MEXICO?

New Mexico became the 47th state in the Union on 1/6/1912 and Arizona became the 48th on 2/14/1912, in plenty of time to participate in the upcoming election when each state cast 3 electoral college votes for Woodrow Wilson. Interestingly, right after the 1908 election, the Old Farmer’s Almanac was already depicting 1912 electoral college votes on a chart. Their chart notes show the number of electoral college votes needed to win the presidency if both Arizona and New Mexico were admitted (266), if only one was admitted (265), or if neither was admitted (263). As it turned out, Woodrow Wilson won the election by a landslide 435 electoral votes out of 531.

Here’s a Daily Double about this election from the final game of the 2008 College Championship: “In the 1912 election he defeated a sitting president & a former president”

Wendi thought it was Hawaii. She lost her $700 bet and finished with $2,100.

Jaime thought the same thing. He lost $1,400, leaving him $2,800.

Tim got it right. He bet $2,600 making his winning total today an even $15,000. His 4-day total is $71,300.

Well, since my petty and malicious attack on yesterday’s stupid answer seemed to go over well, I’ll do it again today.

Anyone (or anytwo, today) who thinks Hawaii’s statehood and Woodrow Wilson’s election were close to each other in time only displays an ignorance of U.S. history.

Now, I was alive (but very young) when Hawaii became a state, so that gives me an advantage, but even so, equating Hawaii as a state with Wilson’s election is the equivalent of saying something like Reagan was president during World War II.

I hate to be quite this negative, but here goes: I honestly believe people are getting stupider and more ignorant with each passing year. I could say more, but I won’t get political here.

A friend heard something earthshaking (to him) during the interview portion of Tues12/6 J! but can’t recall what it was. It would mean a lot if somebody has an idea what that was and posts it. Thanks a million!

    • VJ says:

Here’s a link to CoolJeopardyStories tweet of yesterday’s chat where they summarize what was said in one line LINK Maybe that will jog your friend’s memory.

The only additional detail I recall is that Tim’s trivia award was a free appetizer

Was not a fan of the “join the conjunction” category. Ran the “drugz” category. Not sure what that says about me. lol

TS on Erie Canal surprised me.

I’m guessing this game was after the contestants ate lunch.

Hawaii in a 1912 United States election? .

    • VJ says:

I liked the On the Money category. idk why Tim bet low on that but I bet he wished he bet it all in the moment. Of course, it turned out he didn’t need it.

I’m happy he got his 4th win and that puts him right between Todd Giese and Andrew Pau on the ToC list. I’ll get him up there later.

Same here about the conjunction and drugz categories, Jacob lol.

      • VJ says:

it was funny when Wendi and Tim both said eye-ther and either. Potato potahto. ha ha ha.

        • jacob ska says:

VJ, thanks for jogging my memory on that one. That’s the one that had us here convinced they had just come from lunch. It was Tim who actually buzzed in with that 2nd pronunciation. I couldn’t believe I heard what I heard. C’est la vie!

Also, the podiums now have a Centrum logo turn up after Alex says goodbye,, just like Aleve used to do the promotional consideration.

  5. aaaa says:

Hawaii became a state in 1959, as did Alaska, and the first presidential election after that was in 1960 where JFK battled Richard Nixon and JFK won. The “left through the window” category was about a certain royal leaving a room in Prague through this method, referring to the Defenestration of Prague.

  6. rhonda says:

There was a question in the Rooms category that I didn’t get at all, the answer was they left through the window. Anyone know what that was all about?

    • Cece says:

The Defenestration of Prague—apparently, the royals fell 90+ feet and survived. I call horse manure. 🙂

      • VJ says:

Maybe their royal robes turned into parachutes. That’s what happens to Pearl Pureheart’s dress in Mighty Mouse cartoons when she falls 90+ feet. 🙂

        • Cece says:

Hahaha. That would’ve been a mess if Pearl Pureheart had landed on a pile of horse manure, like they claim the Prague’s royals did, lol!

  7. lou says:

Amazing play from tim aten. Hawaii never had any person elected as president. also congrats on tim being a 4x champion. Did woodrow wilson became responsible for signing The New Deal?
