Final Jeopardy: Health & Medicine (12-5-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/5/2014), in the category “Health & Medicine” was:

In 1985 the Surgeon General called this “the best rescue technique in any choking situation”.

Today, we are finishing up Kids Week with these three players: Tyler Van Patten from Burlington, WI; Neha Rao, from Johns Creek, GA; and Emma Miller, from San Mateo, CA.

Round 1: Tyler found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Hi, Tech” under the $600 clue. After unsuccessfully wrangling with the “Non-Common Core Math” category, he was in the hole for $200. Emma was in the lead with $200 and Neha still had not buzzed in. Tyler bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Round 2: Tyler found the first Daily Double in “States’ Longest Borders” under the $2,000 clue. He was cleaning up in the category and was now in the lead with $14,000, $5,200 more than Emma in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Tyler found the last Daily Double in “The 18th Century” under the $1,600 clue with one $2K clue remaining after this. In the lead with $19,000, he now had $9,800 more than Emma in second place. He bet $1,500 and thought it was James Madison. That was WRONG.

Tyler finished in the lead with $17,500. Emma was next with $11,200 and Neha was in third place with $7,400.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE HEIMLICH MANEUVER?

Dr. Henry Heimlich “spent the late 1970s and early 1980s disparaging the effectiveness of back thumps… in an uphill campaign to promote his technique, which uses the power of air forced from the lungs to propel obstructions outward. Success came in 1985 when U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop endorsed the Heimlich maneuver and urged the Red Cross and American Heart Association to abandon the teaching of ‘hazardous, even lethal’ back blows as a first-aid technique. A year later, both organizations formally adopted the Heimlich maneuver as the best response to choking.” (from The Statesman, a 2011 report on a bill, later passed, no longer requiring Texas restaurants to display Heimlich Maneuver posters).

In 2006, the Red Cross revised its first aid protocol, upgrading back thumps over “abdominal thrusts”. Henry Heimlich’s own son, Peter, became his father’s most ardent critic. He says Koop made the recommendation as a “buddy favor”.

Neha had “the Heimlich Manuever.” Her $4,000 bet brought her score up to $11,400.

Emma had “the Heimlich Manuveur.” She added $6,400 to finish with $17,600.

Tyler wrote down “the Hiemlick Manuever.” His $6,301 bet brought him up to the winning total of $23,801.

FJ Results: 12-5-14

“And remember, folks,” Alex said blithely, “We don’t penalize for incorrect spellings.” He didn’t go into the whys and wherefores and neither will we. We’ll just add it to the list of Spelling Decisions. Here is Tyler’s Winner Circle video:

Maybe I missed it when it happened, but have the rules been changed about spelling in the FJ? We all remember the young man on the verge of tears after Trebek humiliated him for a minor misspelling of “emancipation.” Now it’s “anything goes” apparently!

Boys won four out of five, and the winning girl lucked into it Wednesday and was offset by the only contestant of the week not around for FJ due to being “in the red” being a girl, whom I suspect might also have been driven to tears backstage, because in his introduction on Thursday Trebek felt compelled to talk about how the emotions of the kid contestants, compared to the usual adults, were stronger.

Tom, In the recent past, VJ has explained that if the misspelling doesn’t change the pronunciation of the word it’s accepted by the judges. She even posted the “spelling rules” one time.

Finally, all contestants are correct in Final. As a Wisconsin resident, I was happy to see Tyler win. It was fun watching a week of very smart pre-teens!

VJ, it’s a good thing Alex did not rule against incorrect spelling because none of the contestants would have been correct. As a result there would have been mayhem and all of their parents probably would have charged the stage. Just joking.

It was quite obvious what the kids meant by what they wrote. This was a very good game with math being the only category that stumped them. I have no idea why the clue writers had such long, tricky numbers for such a young age group. This would have been more appropriate for a teen tournament.

Yeah, about the parents. LOL. As to Hiemlick, I guess they looked at it like a Friedman, Freidman kind of thing. I was just worried that a manuever spelling would result in an extra syllable ruling but I’m glad it didn’t.

If I wasn’t sure how to spell maneuver, in my FJ answer I would go with manoover. Manewver would work too 🙂

a sad thing that spelling was not exatly their forte. one would have thought at least one would be able to spell “maneuver”. i would have even settled for the french version…and tyler added the NAME of the guy after whom the procedure is named to the misspelling. now that is a proper name and the way he spelled it the pronunciation COULD change. add some strange math to the mix and we have a winner with 3 mistakes in 3 opportunities but 23.801 to show for it…

      • john blahuta says:

talking about spelling, i of course misspelled “exactly”….right now i am trying to get my foot out of my mouth (finger)as a pps: some clues were really above kid’s week level, “heimlich maneuver” and asking to spell it correctly being one of them. i have to agree with everybody that – given their age and the pressure some don’t feel but can be crushing for others – (callas had stage fright because of her extreme myopia) they performed quite admirably, all in all.

typos and misspellings are 2 different things.
