Final Jeopardy: Top 40 Songs (12-28-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/28/2015) in the category “Top 40 Songs” was:

The first 2 Top 40 hits for this late singer– one in 1971, the other in 1973– ended up becoming official state songs.

New champ Dee Daigle won $19,001 last Friday. She’s back today to take on these two players: Stephen Byrd, from Hartsville, SC; and Patricia Franco, from Arlington, MA.

Round 1: Stephen found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Not My Cup of Tea” under the $600 clue before the first break. He was in the lead in a big way with $4,000, $3,600 more than Dee in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Stephen finished in the lead with $7,400. Dee was second with $4,000 and Patricia was last with $400.

Round 2: Patricia found the first Daily Double in “Sistine Chapel” under the $1,200 clue. She was still in third place but now had $3,200, exactly $5,000 less than Stephen’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

The last Daily Double stayed on the board. Dee lost her lead when she buzzed in on the 6th from last clue in the Star Trek category and blanked out. Patricia got the $2,000 clue in “2 Ys” right next, putting her in the lead. Then she went to the $800 clue in “Range Rovers.” It turned out to be the final clue played and gave Stephen the lead. The “Range Rovers” clues left uncovered were: $400, $1,600 and $2,000.

Stephen finished in the lead with $10,600. Patricia was next with $10,000 and Dee was in third place with $8,200.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS JOHN DENVER?

Dreama Denver, widow of “Gilligan’s Island” star Bob Denver, started a movement to make John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” an official state song of West Virginia in 2013. That happened in March of 2014. Dreama and Bob Denver were not related to John Denver and Dreama is the only native West Virginian.

In Colorado, “Rocky Mountain High” was elevated to state song status seven years earlier (although that one took a lot longer to be approved). John Denver’s real name was Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. He took the surname Denver because it was the capital of his favorite state.

Dee thought it was Ray Charles. That cost her $2,401 and she finished with $5,799.

Patricia got it right. Her $6,401 bet brought her up to $16,401.

Stephen also came up with Ray Charles. He lost $9,401 and wound up in third place with $1,199. So Patricia Franco won the match and will be tomorrow’s returning champ.

Here’s a link to a Salty Dog recipe in case this clue that stumped the players stumped you, too: “A Salty Dog is made with this fruit juice.” That juice is definitely an acquired taste.

Thank you for the John Denver link. I already knew about Deutschendorf and Doris Kappelhoff (Doris Day). I had forgotten about Denver passing the NASA physical for the first citizen’s trip into low-orbit, but being passed over for Christa McAuliffe. Incidentally, the Christa McAuliffe School in west Concord NH replaced the old (Benjamin) Kimball School which was torn down during 2011-2012. My mother spent her freshman year there in 1922, when Kimball was a high school.

I thought it looked like Stephen was going to win, but Patricia stole it.

42/55. The DD was probably in the $1600 or $2000 in the Range Rovers category.
