Sam finished in the lead with $9,000. Brad was next with $7,800 and Amelia was in third place with $6,200.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS L. FRANK BAUM?

Although he was born in New York and died in California, L. Frank Baum lived in Chicago for many years, his family hopping from neighborhood to neighborhood as he wrote. He saw the White City of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition through a green lens. Oz Park, near DePaul University, anchors the fruits of his boundless imagination, the “emerald” on the Midwestern prairie.

Amelia thought it was Lewis Carroll. She bet and lost it all.

Brad came up with Carl Sandburg. He also bet the farm and finished with zero.

    Congrats Sam.

Surprised contestants didn’t recognize photo of Daniel Ortega. He’s been President of Nicaragua so long & in the news a lot.

My favorite category was “Spell it with state abbreviations.” Now I’m going to walk around trying to think of words that contain them. Another brain teaser for me. 🙂

That State Abbreviations Spelling thing wasn’t as bad as that Rhymin’ category yesterday, I suppose, but I was so surprised to see the Daily Double turn up in it. I thought the second DD would be in the NYT Bestsellers category but if it had been, we never would have seen it! I wonder why they didn’t get out of the Nicaragua category and go there.

The Rhymin’ category was awful. There was an even worse category several weeks ago, Jacob hated it, too, but I can’t remember what it was.

      • VJ says:

I think that was the Almost Before & After from the first game of the month.Yeah, that one “took the cake” LOL!!

        • Cece says:

I thought the state abbreviations category was weird.

Rhonda, did you get the first clue in “Meet the Beagles?”

          The Danish Girl—loved that movie.

        • rhonda says:

That’s it, VJ, thanks. It certainly did “take the cake” lol.
Cece, I did know the first clue immediately and was very surprised that it was a TS. I love Alicia Vikander and I loved the Danish Girl. Have you seen Testament of Youth? What a wonderful movie and what a performance by her, she was in just about every scene.

        • Cece says:

No, it wasn’t a TS; Maybe you’re thinking of another clue? The first one in Meet the Beagles was “Beagles were originally bred to hunt….”

I did not see ‘Testament of Youth’. I don’t like war movies.

        • rhonda says:

I’m pretty sure it was a TS, perhaps VJ remembers? Yikes on the first Beagles clue, Cece, although beagles are one of my favorite breeds of dogs.
I don’t like war movies either, Cece, but this was actually an antiwar one about the meaningless of it all..

        • VJ says:

Sam almost ran that Beagles category, Rhonda. He got every one except the last one, about equal parts ale and stout. Amelia got that one. So Sam knew about those beagles and their lapin-hunting ways.

        • rhonda says:

As usual, I mixed things up, sorry about that, Cece and VJ. I had meant to say that I’m pretty sure that the Alicia Vikander clue was a TS, not the beagle one.

        • Cece says:

Rhonda, you totally killed my joke (or rather, my attempt at one), lol. I asked if you got the first clue on the “beagles” category because the answer was ‘rabbits’.

An ‘antiwar’ war movie, same difference. No, thanks. 🙂

        • rhonda says:

I am sorry, Cece, leave it to me and I will spoil a joke without even realizing it!! I guess I’m more used to “lapin” lol.

  4. lou says:

The wizard of oz will always be my favorite movie. Also caroll wasnt a bad guess but where did carl sandburg come from? I wonder if his novels were based on a movie, vj?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, Carl Sandburg is often the first literary figure thought of when Chicago is mentioned. There was a miniseries in the 70s based on Sandburg’s biography of Abraham Lincoln.

      • Bradford Snyder says:

Yep, that was me at the podium. I wasn’t optimistic that Sandburg was correct, but that’s all I could associate with Chicago, as VJ says. The L Frank Baum association was some lateral thinking I couldn’t come up with, although fairly obvious in retrospect.

        • VJ says:

Hey, Brad! Thanks for stopping by. You did swell– you were in the lead until you ran into that danged grapefruit.

        • Bradford Snyder says:

Yep, had RIND and North Dakota, couldn’t think of a state with R to save me. (I’ve only been to Rhode Island 3 times in the last year on business). It didn’t make the tape, but I faced the audience and apologized to the citizens of the great State of Rhode Island.
          Happy Holidays all!

        • VJ says:

Thanks, Brad. I just read the nice article about your J! experience in your local paper
