Final Jeopardy: The Bible (12-11-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/11/2014), in the category “The Bible” was:

The first birthday celebration mentioned in the Bible takes place in Genesis 40 & is in honor of this ruler.

2-day champ Peter McGillicuddy has won $18,799 so far. Today he takes on these two players: Ryan Pensyl, originally from Shamokin, PA; and Jennifer Gilmore, from Menifee, CA.

Round 1: Jennifer found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Stock Symbols” under the $400 clue. She was in second place with $2,800, $1,200 less than Ryan’s lead. She bet $1,000 and thought it was “Baldwin”. That was WRONG.

Ryan finished in the lead with $4,600. Jennifer and Peter were tied in second place at $1,800.

Round 2: Jennifer found the first Daily Double in “Name That Song” under the $2,000 clue. She was in second place with $3,800, $3,200 less than Ryan’s lead. Ignoring Trebek’s suggestion to go for the gusto, she bet $1,800 and she was RIGHT.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS PHARAOH or THE KING OF EGYPT?

In Genesis 40, Joseph is cooling his heels in prison thanks to Potiphar’s wife’s perfidy, when the chief butler and chief baker of Egypt’s king are thrown in the clink. They ask Joseph for help with their strange dreams. Joseph interprets their dreams, asking the butler to tell Pharaoh about his unjust plight. The interpretations come to pass on the third day, which happens to be Pharaoh’s birthday. But Joseph does not meet Pharaoh until 2 years later in Genesis 41 because the chief butler “forgat him.” (Bible Gateway: Gen. 40)

Peter wrote down “Pharoah Ramses” and lost all his money because he gave a name. (Blame Hollywood. The pharaohs in Genesis and Exodus are not named in the Bible.)

Jennifer thought it was King David. She lost $4,000, finishing with $6,800.

Ryan came up with Joseph. He lost $7,001 and finished with $7,599, enough for him to become the new Jeopardy! champ.

FJ Results: 12-11-14

Ryan Pensyl is an Army officer. During the chat, he explained why he may be the strongest Jeopardy! contestant ever: he can bench press 315 lbs. He also did an impression of Dr. Evil.

We assume Trebek will still be worrying over the Final Jeopardy tally tomorrow because it now stands at one out of 12 possibilities.

There are too many bible questions. How about even one Koran or other religious text question in FJ?

We are Judeo- Christian nation. Get over it.
Since most people don’t read, or care to read the Koran, this is irrelevant.

    @vj
did i miss something? what do mean with one out of 12 possibilities???” didn’t see the show yet. did that come up in the interview part??

    • VJ says:

It came up before Alex read the first round categories — he said: “I must admit, I’m a little worried about how things have been going so far this week on Jeopardy! The players have done well in the first two rounds, but we’ve only had one correct response out of nine possibilities in Final Jeopardy! Hopefully, that will change today”

      • john blahuta says:

thanks! maybe they should phrase the fj clue a little more precise, just one thing that comes to mind…. but he is right. we have seen players this week who did VERY well during j and dj. come fj: big brain freeze….

      • john blahuta says:

ironic though: the only one– marybeth– who got a fj right, lost anyway since peter could not be caught….

  3. john blahuta says:

just exactly what i was afraid of, putting a name to it…CotD talk.

    • john blahuta says:

if not for “ramses”, peter would be a 3 day champ…

    • VJ says:

yeah, but I think that would be a natural reaction — to come up with a name or have your answer dinged for not being specific. This is one of those times I won’t pat myself on the back for knowing it because I went to Catholic high school and I really wouldn’t expect anyone to know it who just had a basic overview of the story of Joseph.

Now if the clue was: an actor who played Ramses in The Ten Commandments, I would expect more people to know it. 🙂

Too many triple stumpers in this game. Was not thrilled the category “stock symbols” was left last. Even then 3 clues were left on the board.

Always glad to see a military personnel win. Congrats Ryan.
