Final Jeopardy: Authors (11-27-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/27/2015) in the category “Authors” was:

In 1990 he said, “I would like to do what Faulkner did; carve out a little piece of Mississippi territory & claim it for my own.”

New champ Rob Russell was the only one to get FJ right yesterday and he’s got $20,800 to show for it. In the last game of the week, he is up against these two players: Bianca Benincasa, from Silver Spring, MD; and Darin Brown, from Louisville, CO.

Round 1: Bianca found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Devices” under the $1,000 clue. She was in second place with $4,600, $400 less than Darin’s lead. She bet $800 and thought it was a mouse. That was WRONG.

Darin finished in the lead with $5,000. Bianca was second with $3,800 and Rob was last with $2,600.

Round 2: Rob found the first Daily Double in “Articles of Confederation” under the $1,600 clue on the 4th pick of the round. He was in third place with $3,400, $2,000 less than Darin’s lead. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Article VI stated “…every state shall always keep up a well-regulated and disciplined” one of these “sufficiently armed”. show

Bianca found the last Daily Double in “About That Far” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $15,000, she had $3,600 more than Rob in second place. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Bianca finished in the lead with $16,000. Rob was next with $11,400 and Darin was in third place with $7,800.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS JOHN GRISHAM?

You won’t find this quote in top quotes lists for author, John Grisham, but you will find it in a Mississippi State Alumnus Magazine article (Winter 1990) entitled “A Time to Write,” where Grisham talks about how he got his first novel, “A Time to Kill”, published. “Though Steinbeck is Grisham’s favorite author and literary beacon, the young writer is taking a page from another legend of letters, Mississippian William Faulkner, in plotting his future. ‘I would like to do what Faulkner did carve out a little piece of Mississippi territory and claim it for my own,’ he said, referring to Faulkner’s fictional town of Jefferson and Yoknapatawpha County….”

Darin wrote down Smith. He bet and lost it all.

Rob got it right. He bet it all and finished with $22,800.

Bianca inexplicably wrote down Faulkner, the author already named in the clue. Her $9,000 bet left her with $7,000 and made Rob today’s winner. Rob’s 2-day total is $43,600.

“Inexplicably” is right. I wonder if the clue stays in view for the contestants, as it does for the home viewers. If so, it’s difficult to make sense of “Who is Faulkner?” Even if it doesn’t, it’s difficult to make sense of it except to blame it on nerves. She did seem very nervous, especially during her interview.
