Final Jeopardy: The 16th Century (11-23-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/23/2015) in the category “The 16th Century” was:

In 1521 he was the credited author of “Defence of the 7 Sacraments” against Martin Luther’s attacks.

After a 2-week break for the 2015 ToC, Laura Ashby returns to try for a second win. She won $18,401 in the 11/6/15 match. Her opponents today are: Matt Keeshin, from Chicago, IL; and Colin Thibodeau, from the Bronx, NY.

Round 1: Colin found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Fictional Captains” under the $600 clue. He was in second place with $1,600, $1,200 less than Laura’s lead. He bet $1,400 and came up with Captain Cook. That was WRONG.

He relieves Captain De Vriess of his duty in “The Caine Mutiny”. show

Laura finished in the lead with $5,200. Colin was second with $1,000 and Matt was last with $800.

Round 2: Matt found the first Daily Double in “Women CEOs” under the $2,000 clue. He was in second place with $3,200, $5,200 less than Laura’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Born & raised in Wilmington, Del, Ellen Kullman was perhaps destined to lead this over-200-year-old company. show

Matt found the last Daily Double on his very next pick in “Well-Seasoned Books” under the $1,200 clue. With $6,400, he was still in second place but now only had $2,000 less than Laura. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Shakespeare was hot & cold with these 2 plays that have season in the title. show

Laura finished in the lead with $13,200. Matt was next with $9,200 and Colin was in third place with $5,400.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HENRY VIII?

Nobody knows how much of “In Defence of the Seven Sacraments” Henry VIII really wrote, or if he wrote any of it at all. Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas More and John Fisher have all been named as possible authors or contributors. You’ll find a great article on what was going on at the time on the blog A Bit of Henry Love, including a plausible reason why Henry VIII may have wanted to totally disavow having any hand in authorship after the fact.

Colin thought it was Thomas More. He lost his $5,399 bet and finished with $1.00.

Matt thought it was (John) Calvin. He lost $8,200 and finished with $1,000.

Laura got it right. Her $5,201 bet brought her up to $18,401 the same amount she won in her first match, so her 2-day total is $36,802.

During the chat, Laura talked about an exciting time she and her husband, Mike, had. They went swimming with sharks in Hawaii. Laura made the audience laugh when she said that their usual idea of a vacation is watching TV in a different time zone.

Congrats Laura on your 2nd win.
Jeopardy has already posted on its website under “Notable Contestants” Matt Jackson as the 4th winning money maker in Jeopardy history with a total of $511, 612. They didn’t waste any time.

Alex Jacob should have been given some type of award rather than just have him stand there when he won TOC imo. A trophy, plaque, or certificate would have been appropriate. Jeopardy has the TOC winner just stand there every year. Time to show some class Jeopardy staff.

I wonder how Laura acquired her unusual way of talking. My brother has reacted quite negatively to it and had to turn the show off. I think she reminds him of someone in his life he’d rather forget.

To me, anyone is more watchable than Alex Jacob. That guy pushed “weird” and “phony” to their outer limits. It was suggested he should have been given a trophy. I’ve got a trophy for him. I won’t tell you what’s inscribed on it because we’ve been told not to say anything disrespectful.

After last week, I made a resolution not to watch Jeopardy anymore, but that was like a New Year’s Resolution which doesn’t make it to January 2. I’m not sure why I feel I can’t miss this show. It defies analysis. I’m wondering if maybe it’s because it’s the last show on commercial television that displays even the smallest vestige of intelligence. It’s a far cry from “Family Feud,” where back in the old days when I’d watch it they’d say, “Name a Communist country,” someone would say, “Texas!” and everyone would yell, “Good answer! Good answer!”

Her style of speaking is strange in that she is lawyer. It’s just as annoying as the preacher style of emphasizing final consonants by adding a vowel. e.g. Alex.

        • VJ says:

Seems affected to me. I didn’t notice it at all during the chat.

        • Cece says:

I wish she’d call the clues like Matt did without saying hundred, e.g, “Annoying Lawyers” for 12, “Voice Affectation” for 8, “Vocal Grating” for 4, and so on…

          Geez!

        • VJ says:

My theory is that for every day twitter rags on her speaking style, she’ll win another game as a kind of cosmic reward, and she’ll be the first to get on that new ToC list Alex was talking about.

        • Cece says:

You’re probably right. But in the meantime, I’ll take “when is she gonna lose?” for $2K.

        • SG says:

I agree with Cece – Her voice is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard.
I can’t remember when a contestant’s voice bothered me more than hers does.
