Final Jeopardy: Entertainment Weekly’s 50 Greatest Movie Directors (11-2-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/2/2016) in the category “Entertainment Weekly’s 50 Greatest Movie Directors” was:

He “inaugurated a new depth–both visually…and emotionally…and (had) a voice that paid the bills until he died”

New champ Vivek Ravishanker won $23,199 yesterday. It’s his second game today and his challengers are: Dennis Fipps, from San Diego, CA; and Courtney Cissel, from Raleigh, NC.

Courtney found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “‘B’rands” under the $1,000 clue on the 10th pick of the round. She was in second place with $1,200, $1,000 less than Vivek’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

Courtney found the first Daily Double in “Anatomical Quotes” under the $2,000 clue on the 5th pick. Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ORSON WELLES?

“He was the star and director of what many people claim to be the greatest film ever made,” Alex Trebek said. Entertainment Weekly’s 1996 article on the 50 Greatest Directors and Their 100 Best Movies, ranked Orson Welles as No. 2 primarily on the strength of that one film, “Citzen Kane” (1941). You will find the entire paragraph that the clue came from on that article.

The part about Welles’ voice “paying the bills until he died” refers, we assume, to his voiceover work through the end of his life, such as providing the voice of Pippo the Pigeon in “The Enchanted Journey” (1984) and Unicron in “The Transformers: The Movie” (1986). Welles died on 10/10/1985, in between the releases of those 2 films.

Dennis wrote down “Frank Kapra.” He lost his $3,001 bet and finished with $3,999.

Courtney had Selznick, as in producer David O. That cost her $2,000 and she had $8,000 left.

Vivek got it right. He bet $5,001 so he won today’s match with $20,001. His 2-day total is $43,200.

I thought that the “voice that paid the bills” part was a reference to his horribly depressing series of Ernest and Julio Gallo commercials. Sell no wine before it’s time and all that.

    • VJ says:

@Fletcher, I’m sure you’re right and that was a big part of their reference. He did a bunch of others, too. Check out this Newsweek article: 16 Hilarious Examples of Orson Welles’ Late Career Slumming. Says he was making what is now the equivalent of $75K a day for his commercials. Wow!

  2. Cece says:

I was confused by this FJ clue—”both visually…and emotionally… ” 🙂 Not the writers’ fault, though. I wouldn’t have got it even if the clue had a TOM flashing in neon colors.

citizen kane i remember it very well. had a vhs movie at home down in my basement. It was the good old times with that movie. congrats to vivek on his second win. we need him to win 3 more games to have him in the toc

  4. VJ says:

Anybody ever read a book and then the film version replaces it in your memory? That’s kind of what happened to me on that “Birth, High Times & Corruption of Atlantic City” Nelson Johnson book only it was TV. I remember more about the series than book!

There are 11 clues from this match up now LINK

Courtney probably should have wagered $0 in a exactly 2/3 game, she’d have won on a triple stumper if there was one. 49/61 here.

Congrats Vivek! I was pulling for another win for you champ.

Have seen “Citizen Kane” on TCM several times over the years. I like the way they explain the background of actors and directors in the making of old movies on that channel. Helped me with today’s CotD. Best channel Ted Turner created.

VJ, you’re on a roll. Kudos on your 1/3 prediction.

    • VJ says:

Thanks Jacob. I was looking at the 2 years ago recap earlier and that’s where I got the idea that there might be an image or something else to go with that clue. That’s what happened that day.

Congrats to Vivek for getting it on that little bit of info.

I do think Vivek deserved to win this game and become a repeat champion. He was the only player to not misunderstand a category in both the 1st round and the Double Jeopardy! round, and he’s a good player. We’ll see what Vivek does tomorrow in his 3rd game.
