The Final Jeopardy question (10/25/2016) in the category “Words in the News 2016” was:

The Centre for European Reform is one of the sources credited with coining this new 6-letter portmanteau word.

Current champ Lani Gonzalez won her second match yesterday, bringing her winnings up to $35,600. Today her opponents are: Joel Goldes, from Oak Park, CA; and Yoey Sacks, from New York, NY.

Round 1 Categories: Name the Capital – Thrillers & Mysteries – Magazines – Sounds Like a Flower – The “IV” League – Justin Timberlake

Lani found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Magazines” under the $600 clue on the 10th pick of the round. She was in the lead with $1,600, $600 more than Yoey in second place. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Lani finished in the lead with $8,200. Yoey was second with $4,400 and Joel was last with $1,400.

Round 2 Categories: People of the Biblical Book – Dewey – North Carolina, Historically – Whatsamatta “U”? – From Screen to Stage – Word Origins

Yoey found the first Daily Double in “From Screen to Stage” under the $1,600 clue on the 5th pick. She had $6,400 at this point, $2,200 less than Lani’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and took a guess with “The Sound of Music.” That was WRONG and costly.

Songs from this musical based on a 1968 film included “Haben Sie Gehoert Das Deutsche Band?” & “Where Did We Go Right?” show

Lani found the last Daily Double in “Biblical Book” under the $800 clue. There were but 4 clues left after it in the same category. In the lead with $14,200, she had $6,800 more than Joel in second place. She bet $800 and did not know so she was WRONG.

Lani finished in the lead with $15,000, another runaway that she achieved in the “Biblical Book” category, despite the DD miss. Joel was next with $7,400 and Yoey was in third place with $2,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS BREXIT?

Many sources credit the Economist with coming up with the term in the form of “Brixit” in June 2012. WordHistories.com found an earlier tweet from BritishInfluence.org’s twitter account using the term “Brexit.” They also mention its forerunner, “Grexit” (Greece + exit), that is credited to two Citigroup economists. Wikipedia’s article points to a May 15, 2012 blog post by Peter Wilding, which is probably all good because he is the founder of British Influence. We couldn’t even find an article crediting the Centre for European Reform.

Yoey got it right. She bet it all and finished with $4,800.

Joel wrote down “Euroop.” He lost his $7,399 bet and had $1.00 left.

Lani also got it right. She didn’t bet anything once again. Her 3-day total is $50,600.

Wagering zero is always a good bet in a case like this.

  2. Nikki says:

    What’s Euroop???

    • Cece says:

Either a joke or a trumpism, which would be the same thing.

(Unless I’m missing something and it’s a word from a tv show or movie, or….) Anyone?..

I guess it could be a portmanteau of European + Opinion or +Operations or +Opportunities if you don’t read the last part as “oop”

Lani congrats 3x champ. Interesting how she wagers zero in fj.

VJ, the Financial Times in 2012 credited the CER for the term brexit. See the following statement from 18 October 2012 Financial Times: “Beyond the realm of politics, investors in Britain have been slow to wake up to the implications of what the CER has dubbed ‘Brexit’.” Hope this helps.

    • VJ says:

Thanks a bunch for that Jacob. The CER has a page on its site for just what you quoted from that article and credits the Financial Times.

Here’s the link to the article (I had to answer 3 questions before they would let me read it)

PS on Lani’s FJ wager or lack thereof, she didn’t have much leeway today. She did yesterday but maybe it was a good thing she didn’t risk anything, when she didn’t get FJ right.

looks like my prediction came true. She is playing just like seth wilson and buzzy cohen. congrats to lani once again. Joel has made foolish bets when he should have bet conservatively on final jeopardy.

  5. rhonda says:

Which comedian did Joel say that he worked with?

  6. Steve says:

Nice wager Joel! Cost yourself a grand!

  7. VJ says:

Well, well, 3 consecutive runaways for Lani. It will be really crazy if this happens again tomorrow. We’ll have to call it the Lani Hex or something. In any event, she does need to win again tomorrow to have a chance to be in the ToC.
