Final Jeopardy: The Civil War (10-22-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/22/2015) in the category “The Civil War” was:

There were about 900 casualties in the 1862 Battle of Secessionville, fought in this state

New champ Dennis Golin won $31,999 yesterday. That could end up being the highest daily win this week. Today he takes on these two players: Jennifer Robinson, from Windham, ME; and Philip Clark, from Falls Church, VA. Let’s see who brought their “A” game.

Round 1: Dennis found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “American History” under the $800 clue on the 5th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $1,200, $800 more than Jennifer in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

In 1921 Harding nominated him to be Chief Justice, an historic appointment. show

Dennis finished in the lead with $6,400. Philip was second with $4,800 and Jennifer was last with $3,400.

Round 2: Dennis found the first Daily Double in “French Literature” under the $1,600 clue. He was in second place with $7,600 now, $1,200 less than Philip’s lead. He bet $5,000 and he was RIGHT.

One of the chief aims of this 1831 novel was to “inspire the nation with a love of its national architecture.” show

Dennis found the last Daily Double in “Musical Chairs” under the $2,000 clue. There were 4 clues left after it and Alex gave the less than a minute warning. Leading with $16,600, Dennis had $4,600 more than Philip in second place. He bet $4,500 and thought it was “Parker” That was WRONG.

This label, home to many Chicago blues greats, was named for brothers Leonard & Phil, not for a board game. show

Dennis finished in the lead with $14,100. Jennifer was next with $13,000 and Philip was in third place with $12,000.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS SOUTH CAROLINA?

The Battle of Secessionville was waged on June 16, 1862 when the Union attempted to capture Charleston, South Carolina, with an attack at Secessionville, just south of the city on James Island. Some believe that its importance is often overlooked. The battle was recently in the news when Boone Plantation chose to cancel its annual reenactment in the wake of the Emanuel AME Church killings.

There is a short first-hand account of the battle in a letter written to Jacob Newton Cardozo, at his request and included in his book, Reminiscences of Charleston, online.

Philip bet $8,000 and finished with $20,000.

Jennifer bet it all and topped that with $26,000.

Dennis won the match with $27,100 by betting $13,000. His 2-day total is $59,099.

During the chat, Dennis said he has lived in the same apartment in New York City his entire life except for two years, when he was away at college. He also mentioned a humdinger river view.

Jboard is talking about a contestant from 2008 whose interview in their third game was about them being a Beatles fan. PLayer is in third place going into FJ! and the category is Beatles songs and wins their third game on a sole get.

  2. aaaa says:

    47/60 here.

  3. Alex says:

What is the meaning of the crossed thumb hand gesture that Dennis made after FJ?

  4. Jkw says:

Do you think they are given answers ahead of the show

    • Jeff Xie says:

they aren’t. In fact, I believe they choose the game boards for the week the day before taping for that week commences.

  5. Linda Yarnell says:

Did your lady Civil War expert contestant, Jennifer Robinson, point out the ironic fact that even though the clue “Battle of Secessionville” strongly pointed to South Carolina, which was the first state to “secede” from the union, the community of Secessionville bore that name much earlier, “Secessionville” was refering to its popularity as a place to vacation from Charleston, or “secede”, ie “withdraw”. My great grandfather, Maj. William Gildersleeve Vardell served under General Nathan “Shanks” Evans, the colorful and controversial victor of the Battle of Secessionville.

    • VJ says:

Well, thanks for sharing the info, despite the snarky intro. Jennifer never said she was an expert and neither did I.

  6. VJ says:

I have to laugh at my feeble prediction that Philip would get FJ right. These players have me spooked this week on triple solves though I did also think that Dennis would get it. Jennifer was the one that I was really unsure about. Then in the chat, it was revealed that she is a Civil War buff with a huge library that includes 19th century books.

I was like LOL, my stars are truly misaligned this week. Good thing I didn’t waste any money on lottery tickets.

  7. Leena says:

Some tingle is getting me. It’s saying “Dennis will be a last-minute ToC qualifier!”. This is just plain creepy!

    • jacob ska says:

@Leena, I agree. Dennis is sharp.

      • Leena says:

He’ll need a big payday to wrap up the week to qualify tomorrow (cause of Michael Bilow’s 96K!), and if not then he’ll need to win 4 games, but he’ll pass Bilow by 5 for sure.

    • VJ says:

I would be happier if he was still winning when they start taping the TOC.

I am sure Dennis will remember this game forever when he got to open the first round with: “I’ll take the herb, Alex… for $400”

      That devilish smile!

      • Leena says:

        Could be a possibility.

      • Richard Corliss says:

I don’t think Dennis will come to the tournament of champions.

        • VJ says:

          Maybe the next one, Richard?

        • Richard Corliss says:

          No.

        • Cece says:

What I liked about that DD was the architecture angle they took, though I think they could’ve made it a little harder by omitting the “1831” Tom.
You don’t have to find the ‘Herb” clip, really, I was just kidding.

No, I had never seen the Music Man clip. Honestly, I love music but I’m not into Musicals. Weird, huh?

And on the TOC discussion above, I have a feeling it has already been taped. When Matt’s mother slipped on her interview and mentioned the TOC game on a Wednesday, I think that’s when they started taping. But I may be wrong.

        • VJ says:

I thought what Matt’s mom was giving away was that Matt’s run was over and he had qualified for the TOC. On Monday of this week, Alex said if Josh kept winning, he could get in the TOC. That was his 2nd game and he didn’t win but I took that to mean it wasn’t taped yet.

      • Cece says:

May we have a clip of that, please, please VJ (“I’ll take the herb.”)? JK!

Aw, you like that smile, do you? I prefer the slow one…, lol.

I liked this game—fast paced and competitive. For a while there in the 1st round, I thought Dennis was gonna dominate the entire game. Then, the other two were like, uhuh…no way, dude. Nice.

I also liked that DD in French Literature. And yes, VJ, you got something right in your prediction. :):)

        • VJ says:

Yeah, Alex was so surprised that Dennis got that DD right away though if it had been slow smile boy, Alex would have probably said he’s amazing like he did on the Camelot/Jackie O clue.

I liked the Balzac clue — did you ever see The Music Man number with Hermione Gingold saying Balzac?

PS – I’ll try to find a clip of the herb moment. It wouldn’t surprise me if one is already up.

      • SG says:

Someone please explain the “I’ll take the herb, Alex…”
(went right over my head – several of you seem to know what it referred to….)

        • VJ says:

The category name was actually “Herbs & Spices”, SG, so Dennis was being cute there with a reference to pot.
