Final Jeopardy: Business (10-14-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/14/2014), in the category “Business” was:

Today this company markets more than 100 times the number of products found in a slogan it used in 1896.

We’ve got co-champs today for the second time in Season 31. Shane Curtis and Dan Tran tied at $5,600 yesterday after neither of them got FJ. That result also made Shane a 2-day champ with $23,401. Their challenger today is Candice Torres, from Stallings, NC.

Round 1: Candice found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “‘2’-Square Crossword Clues” under the $800 clue. She was in third place with $2,800, $1,600 less than Shane’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Dan finished in the lead with $5,200. Shane was second with $5,000 and Candice was last with $4,200.

Round 2: Dan found the first Daily Double in “World Cities” under the $1,600 clue. He was in the lead with $6,000, $1,000 more than Shane in second place. He bet $3,000 and had no guess so he was WRONG.

Morocco was named for this city known for its centuries-old red clay buildings. show

Dan found the last Daily Double in “Who Wrote It?” under the $800 clue with one clue ($400) left on the board. The other 3 clues in the same category had just been triple stumpers and Dan was now in second place with $5,800, $9,200 less than Shane’s lead. He bet $2,000 and came up with Wollstonecraft. That was WRONG.

“We asked you to speak about women and fiction– what has that got to do with a room of one’s own.” show

Shane finished in the lead with a runaway $15,000. Dan was next with $3,800 and Candice was in third place with $1,800.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS HEINZ?

This is from the Heinz Trivia page which we had occasion to link to previously when there was an FJ about the speed the company’s ketchup exits the bottle. On what the “57” refers to, they say: “While riding a train in New York City in 1896, Henry Heinz saw a sign advertising 21 styles of shoes, which he thought was clever. Although Heinz was manufacturing more than 60 products at the time, Henry thought 57 was a lucky number. So, he began using the slogan “57 Varieties” in all his advertising. Today the company has more than 5,700 products around the globe, but still uses the magic number of “57.”” (Heinz Trivia)

As also noticed in today’s Spoiler Talk, this FJ was a $200 clue not too long ago (12-20-2013): “Its ’57 varieties’ slogan was devised in 1896, but today the company markets more than 5,700 products.” The category was “Encylopedia Britannica Says So”.

Candice drew a blank. She lost her $1,799 bet and finished with $1.

Dan thought it was McDonald’s (founded in 1940). He bet nothing so he finished with the same $3,800 he started with.

Shane got it right. His $3,000 bet brought his winning total up to $18,000. Shane’s 3-day total is $42,001.

FJ Results: 10-14-14

During the chat, Shane talked about being a big KISS fan and how his awesome wife dressed up in full KISS regalia at the concerts they were able to catch.

2 years ago:: ALL of the players got this FJ in “Americana”

The creator of this comic strip did not like its 1950 change in title, believing it suggested insignificance. show

surprisingly only shane got fj right. i thought the fj clue was an early christmas gift. well, after the tie yesterday – although probably not quite the way it was intended – shane was left standing after the dust cleared and deservedly so. he made it a runaway and was the only one who got fj right (only baskin robbins and heinz came to mind…but there are certainly not thousands of icecream varieties…) we shall see tomorrow if shane is really good or his opponents so far were rather below average. but a touch over 42K is not too bad, so congratulations and maybe we will finally get a champion who can get into double digit wins?

Well Dan wasn’t a bad opponent at all. Remember yesterday, he was in the lead before FJ. Today, he just got flustered when that one DD cost him $3K and started trying to catch up the wrong way, taking guesses. It was too bad for him that the last DD was in a category that was a triple stumper for all of them!

The 70s lineup of KISS was the one that got inducted this year(Frehley, Kriss, Stanley, Simmons), but infighting as so many rock bands have dealt with kept the foursome from appearing together.
