Final Jeopardy: Countries of the World (10-10-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/10/2014), in the category “Countries of the World” was:

It became a colony of the U.S. in 1898, a commonwealth in 1935 & an independent country in 1946.

New champ Rena Morse won $9,199 in yesterday’s game. Today she takes on these two players: Shane Curtis, from Lansing, KS; and Elizabeth Crofton, from Tucker, GA.

Round 1: Shane found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “I Beg, You’re Pardoned” under the $600 clue, with 2 clues left on the board. He had $10,400, a fabulous $8,800 lead over Elizabeth in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Shane finished in the lead with $12,400. Elizabeth was second with $2,400 and Rena was last with $400.

Round 2: Elizabeth found the first Daily Double in “Characters in British Books” under the $2,000 clue. She was in second place with $4,400, $8,000 less than Shane’s lead. She bet $2,000 and guessed Linnaeus. That was WRONG.

Elizabeth found the last Daily Double in “Religious & Secular Homophones” under the $1,600 clue. Now in third place, she had $3,600, $10,000 less than Shane’s lead. She bet $3,000 and got quite flustered. At the last second, she guessed “gatling”. That was WRONG. (Coincidentally, that was also a wrong guess on the last DD yesterday).

A religious code, or a big gun. show

Shane finished in the lead with $15,200. Rena was next with $9,200 and Elizabeth was in third place with $3,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE PHILIPPINES?

June 12, 1898: Filipino rebels led by Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the Philippines independent after 300 years of Spanish rule. “By mid-August, Filipino rebels and U.S. troops had ousted the Spanish, but Aguinaldo’s hopes for independence were dashed when the United States formally annexed the Philippines as part of its peace treaty with Spain…. In 1935, the Commonwealth of the Philippines was established with U.S. approval, and Manuel Quezon was elected the country’s first president. On July 4, 1946, full independence was granted to the Republic of the Philippines by the United States.” (History.com)

Although the Philippines initially celebrated its Independence Day on July 4th, it was later moved to June 12 in recognition of the 1898 Declaration of Independence. Here is a link to Secretary of State Kerry’s congratulatory note on this year’s celebration.

Elizabeth wrote down Puerto Rico, still a U.S. territory. She bet and lost it all.

Rena got it right. Her $9,000 bet brought her up to $18,200.

Shane also got it. He bet $3,201 bringing him up to today’s winning total of $18,401. We will see the new champ on Monday.

FJ Results: 10-10-14

Shane Curtis was introduced as an assistant professor at the start of the show. In the chat, Alex mentioned that he is a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army. Right then, you knew he had FJ! if you had already seen the clue.

2 years ago:: NONE of the players got this FJ in “Oscar Nominees”

One of his first Oscar nominations was for Best Actor; none of his 22 other Oscar nominations was for acting. show

nothing to say really except rena should have bet if all. if wrong, she would have finished with zero instead of 200, if right shane could have played for a tie. whether you lose by one or 201 bucks really does not matter.
