Final Jeopardy: Recent Films

The Final Jeopardy question (1/9/2012), in the category “Recent Films” was:

“An early scene in this 2011 film is set in Tonsberg, Norway in the year 965 A.D.”

Friday’s champ Dan McShane was back today to begin a new week and possibly continue, but only if he is able to defeat these two challengers: Julie Podlesni from Chattanooga, TN and Sean Norris from Portland, OR.

Julie was not only doing well, she was in the lead when she found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Labor Day for Hercules.” She had $3,000, $1,600 more than Sean.

“Hercules hunted down a brass-hooved stag that was sacred to this goddess.”

She bet $800 and was RIGHT.

Julie was still in the lead with $5,400 by the end of the round. Dan was second with $2,200 and Sean lost some of that dough we mentioned earlier. He finished last with $400.

In Double Jeopardy, Dan found the first Daily Double in “Felonious Monks.” He had $4,200. Alex said it was his chance to take the lead away from Julie.

“AKA Saloth Sar, he was a novice monk for a time in Cambodia before becoming infamous for “‘killing fields’

We wouldn’t be a true Daily Double mood after that Jeopardy! round and neither was Dan. With $2,400 less than Julie, he bet $1,200. He was RIGHT, always the way when you’re cautious.

Dan also got the second Daily Double in “‘Round Midnight.” He had $7,400.

“‘Midnight’s Children’ by Salman Rushdie tells of the post-colonial era in the nation where Rushdie was born.”

Now he was only $400 behind Julie. He bet $1,200 again. He was WRONG, but that was okay because he then went on a stampede.

Dan finished in the lead with $16,200. Julie was next with $13,400 and Sean, who never quite got his mojo working, went into Final Jeopardy with $800.

Dan looked totally stumped by the Final Jeopardy question, Julie looked uncertain. Only Sean looked like he knew it and only one of the contestants got the right answer — yeah — the one who looked like he knew it.

What is a Thor?

“Centuries ago, in 965 A.D., the Frost Giants of Jotunheim, led by Laufey, attack Earth with the Casket of Ancient Winters, but are defeated by the Gods of Norse mythology. Odin’s army of Asgard reclaims the Casket and Jotunheim is reduced to ruin.” Thor – Marvel Wiki”.

Sean bet $44.00 bringing his total today to $844.

Julie wrote down “Hamlet” (wasn’t he in Denmark with something rotten?) and that cost her $11,798. She ended up with $1,602, which shows that she had every intention of landing in second place in case she got Final Jeopardy wrong.

Dan was writing down “The Girl with the Dra” when time ran out and he couldn’t add “gon Tattoo” which was wrong anyhow. The $10,601 he lost left him with $5,599, more than enough to be the winner so he retained the championship.

Dan’s 2-day total is $24,400.

no, Jean, the answer really was Thor

  2. Jean T says:

On 1/9/12, one of the contestants got the final category wrong but was given credit for getting it right. It did not affect the outcome. The “answer” was “What is Captain America?” but the contestant said “What was Thor?”
