Final Jeopardy: Places on the Map (1-7-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/7/2016) in the category “Places on the Map” was:

Thanks to John Cabot, 16th century French documents included this island designated as “Terre Neuve”.

2x champ Steve Belding is going for a third win today, and he’s got $48,401 in winnings to show for the last two games. These challengers want to win, too: Brian Rafferty, from Forest Hills, NY; and Lizzie Turner, originally from Birmingham, AL.

Round 1: Brian found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Living the Spaced Out Life” under the $800 clue, with two clues left after it. He was in third place with $2,200, $4,800 less than Steve’s lead. He bet $1,200 and he was RIGHT.

More than an acre of these provide power to the I.S.S. & also make it the brightest object in the night sky after the moon. show

They didn’t get to the other two clues. Steve finished in the lead with $7,000. Lizzie and Brian were tied at $3,400.

Round 2: Steve found the first Daily Double in “Flowery Prose” under the $800 clue on the 7th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $8,600, $5,200 more than Lizzie in second place. He bet $4,000 and thought it was a dahlia. That was WRONG.

In an Alexandre Dumas novel, the town of Haarlem offers a prize to anyone who can grow a black one of these. show

Steve found the last Daily Double in “Ninth Wave” under the $1,200 clue. In second place with $10,600, he was only $400 behind Lizzie’s lead. He bet $4,000 and thought it was the 1812 Overture. That was WRONG.

At the 1824 premier of this work, the musicians & choir were told to ignore the conductor. show

Lizzie finished in the lead with $11,400. Steve was next with $8,600 and Brian was in third place with $3,400.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS NEWFOUNDLAND?

Here is a link to a 17th century map of “Le Canada ou Nouvelle France” that is available for sale on Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps, Inc. for $4,800. It shows that Newfoundland was called “Neuve Terre” then by the French and, actually, it still is, although many other areas have been renamed.

Brian wrote down Nova Scotia. He lost his $2,401 bet and finished with $999.

Steve got it right. He bet $1,799, finishing with $10,399.

Lizzie thought it was Prince Edward Island. That cost her $6,000 and left her with $5,400. So Steve remains the Jeopardy! champ. His 3-day total is $58,801.

FJ Results: 1-7-16

That Round 2 “A is the Only Vowel” category was a real killer, wasn’t it? The players were stumped by every one but the $800 clue.
$400 – A simple narrative poem composed in short stanzas & made for singing
$800 – It’s an opacity of the eye lens
$1200 – Don’t be an idiot! Name this term for a learned scholar.
$1600 – Worn here, it’s comfy but can also be elegant
$2000 – It’s an East Indian fig tree.

2 years ago: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Magazines”

This title, launched in early 1930, seemed at odds with the Great Depression in subject & $1 cover price. show

During the $800 clue in the James category in the first round, the camera took a shot of a $400 monitor instead of an $800 monitor. 41/57 here.

Today featured the return of the dreaded Seven Dwarfs category.

With all the other groups of seven to choose from, must we?

I thought of you immediately when I saw that category, VJ.
And another clue about Frozen tonight.

LOL, Rhonda. this game was a bit painful to watch. I was just reading an article last week about how Merv Griffin and Alex Trebek fought the network against dumbing down the clues. Lately it seems like that battle was lost.

PS – I was being sarcastic about the A is the only vowel category being a killer. I still don’t see what the problem was there, though I guess we could give the guys a pass on the caftan.

I guess it goes along with education in this country being dumbed down, although that’s been going on for many years now.

    Go Steve go. Congrats!

I hate that you miss the “tulipmania” clue from the 1600s in the Netherlands in the first Daily Double in round two. However, you still ended up the champ.
    That’s what matters.
