Final Jeopardy: Name the 19th Century Work (1-6-17)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/6/2017) in the category “Name the 19th Century Work” was:

Modern bourgeois society… is like the sorcerer who is no longer able to control the powers… called up by his spells.

New champ Joe Bartolomeo won $14,000 yesterday. In the last game of the week, he takes on these two players: Christina Bussmann, from Columbus, OH; and Dante Atkins, from Washington, D.C.

Round 1 Categories: Child Rearing – State Capital Events – U.S. Military Men – Bible Book ’em – 2-Letter Words – I Married a Musician

Dante found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Bible Book ’em” under the $1,000 clue on the 19th pick. He was in the lead with $6,200, $4,000 ahead of Joe in second place. He bet $2,000 and thought it was Exodus. That was WRONG.

Dante found the last Daily Double in “Chemical Element Symbols” under the $1,600 clue. Only one clue was left after it now. In second place with $14,200, he had $800 less than Joe’s lead. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Dante finished in the lead with $17,200. Joe was next with $15,000 and Chistina was in third place with $3,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO”?

This quote comes from Chapter I (“Bourgeois and Proletarians”) of the Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels political pamphlet published in 1848. After a fairly lengthy indictment of “the modern bourgeoisie,” Goethe’s 1797 poem, “Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, is alluded to. Many 19th century readers would have already been familiar with Goethe’s poem. Those who grew up in the latter half of the 20th century may have been acquainted with the Mickey Mouse take on the poem long before they heard of Goethe, Marx or Engels.

Christina got it right. She bet it all and finished with $7,200.

Joe also got it right. He bet $7,500 so that brought him up to $22,500.

Dante came up with “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.” He lost his $12,801 bet and finished with $4,399. So Joe won again and his 2-day total is $36,500. We’ll be seeing Joe again on Monday and we hope to see you too.

I’m excited to see if Joe Bartolomeo wins his 3rd game, or not, but there’s just 1 problem that doesn’t affect Joe, but it affects me. I’m gonna be on vacation, so hopefully, I won’t be thinking about this the entire vacation.

    • Dalton Higbee says:

Why are you going on vacation?

      • Dalton Higbee says:

Is it your school that doesn’t start until after MLK Day?

        • William Weyser says:

Yes, but that’s not the point. The point is that I’m going on a cruise to Cozumel and Yucatan, and I’m gonna be on this vacation for about 5 or more days, before we have to drive Sammy back to campus at UT Austin.

      • Lou says:

Vacations are needed for people to take time off from school or work. So its a requirement because for most high school students its a two week break until after new years

        • Dalton Higbee says:

But Christmas Break is over, but some colleges and universities resume school after the winter break usually the day after the MLK holiday.

      • Lou says:

True, some colleges have a 4 week break for most kids until mid or late january, then a week of spring break in march and then a 4 month summer break from may into late august.

    • Lou says:

Also enjoy the cruise to the Yucatan and Cozumel. Furthermore, what is your brother studying at UT Austin?

  2. VJ says:

Couldn’t help but notice that Kim Kardashian was the only one in that “Married” category who didn’t get a description (and Trebek didn’t even say her last name right). She has been described in other clues as a reality star. One called her a “spoiled sometimes-clothed rich girl”

Sad to say, I ran that category, VJ. lol

      • VJ says:

LOL Rhonda. I blanked out on Chrissy Teigen’s hubby though I remembered that she was a triple stumper last June and that time, they showed a picture of her.

Joe sure caught up with that category and he’s aces at history, too.

We have yet to have the correct response for whoever is in the lead before Final Jeopardy! of the year.
