Final Jeopardy: 20th Century Artists (1-19-17)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/19/2017) in the category “20th Century Artists” was:

A 1910 magazine article asked this groundbreaking artist if he used models; he grinned & said, “Where would I get them?”

3x champ John Avila is now up to $40,600 in winnings. Today his challengers are: Neil Uspal, from Seattle, WA; and Rachel Bauman, from Bethesda, MD.

Round 1 Categories: It Doesn’t Grow on Trees – Adjectival Description – Body Works – Song of “Myself” – The New Testament – Straight Outta…

John found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The New Testament” under the $600 clue on the 3rd pick of the round. He was in the lead with $400, $200 more than Rachel in second place. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

He told his fellow disciples, “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails… I will not believe” in the resurrection. show

John finished in the lead with $6,000. Rachel was second with $5,400 and Neil was last with $4,000.

Round 2 Categories: It Grows on Trees – Authors’ Other Jobs – If They Married – On the Laos – Silent “O” – A Date for the Inaugural Ball

Rachel found the first Daily Double in “On the Laos” under the $1,200 clue on the 9th pick. She was in second place with $6,600 at this point, $600 less than John’s lead. She bet $2,000 and guessed the Yellow River. That was WRONG.

Most of the navigable waterways of Laos are along this river. show

Neil found the last Daily Double in “Inaugural Ball” under the $1,600 clue, with 7 clues left after it. In the lead with $14,000, he had $5,800 more than Rachel in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

James Madison held the first official Inaugural Ball in this year; 3 years later came war with Great Britain. show

Neil finished in the lead with a runaway $18,400. Rachel was next with $8,200 and John was in third place with $7,600.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS PABLO PICASSO?

The quote comes from the 1910 “Architectural Record” article “The Wild Men of Paris” by Gelett Burgess, drawn from his interviews with Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, André Derain, Othon Friesz, Jean Metzinger, Auguste Herbin and Béla Czóbel. Burgess said that Picasso was the only one with a sense of humor. “You ask him if he uses models, and he turns to you a dancing eye. ‘Where would I get them?’ grins Picasso, as he winks at his ultramarine ogresses.”

Gelett Burgess is also known for his “Purple Cow” nonsense poem, sometimes misattributed to Ogden Nash. Check out his profile on AmIAnnoying.com

John bet $601. That brought him up to $8,201.

Rachel didn’t bet anything. She remained at $8,200.

Neil bet $1,000. He had Man Ray first but crossed him off for the right response. He bet $1,000 and won the match with $19,400. Neil will be back tomorrow as the new Jeopardy! champ. That ends the “leader curse” and the last time I can recall all 3 getting Final Jeopardy was on 12/21/2016.

Final Jeopardy (1/19/2017) John Avila, Rachel Bauman, Neil Uspal

A triple stumper from each round:

IT DOESN’T GROW ON TREES ($1000) The name of this type of cement comes from an English isle, not a Pacific Northwest city

ON THE LAOS ($2000) Gen. Vang Pao & his fellow soldiers of this ethnic group helped the U.S. fight a secret war in Laos

2 years ago: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Candy”

An early ad for this candy bar featured a fleur-de-lis flag and a song with the lyrics “fun for all” show

Were any categories related to medicine? If so, Neil should’ve cleaned up:

Yes, during the chat after Alex Trebek introduced Neil as a pediatric emergency medicine physician, he said that he noticed Neil “licking his lips” when the “Body Works” category came up. Neil said “It’s true.” Neil was able to buzz in first (and get right) 3 of the clues in that category

I suspect the network newscasts will be 60 minutes tomorrow night. If they are, one of J! or WOF will for the most part be preempted on the East Coast at least. I suspect the stations showing the Saturday WOF or J! rerun would show the preempted Friday show on Saturday. Let’s Make a Deal and TPIR are preempted on CBS for inaugural coverage. Celebrity Name Game is in reruns. Feud and Millionaire might get some preemption tomorrow depending on when it is shown and if its on a CBS, NBC, ABC or Fox station between 10AM-4PM EST or not; Millionaire will have 2009 J! TofC winner Dan Pawson as a contestant tomorrow.

Rachel, even though there was no way you were going to win, why would you wager $0. If you want to stay small, I’d say $599 at best, so as to force John to get final right, which he did, but John’s $601 wager doesn’t cover the unsafe wager of $599, so Dr. Neil Uspal made the only good wager tonight, and granted, it’s not the 1st time we’ve seen this happen. On September 6th, 1999, the Season 16 premiere, and also the very 1st episode of Kids Week, Nate Austin had the lead with $5,200, and Cassie Hill had $3,400. Cassie got Final Jeopardy! right, and wagered $1,801, putting her in the lead by $1, and Nate also got it right, but for some stupid reason, he didn’t risk any money, so Cassie beats Neal by $1, and wins $5,201, and also, in the 2nd semi-final match of the 2004 Tournament Of Champions that aired on 9/28/04. Anne Boyd had $14,700, and Tom Walsh had $11,800. Tom got it right, and wagered $2,901, putting him ahead of Anne by $1. Anne also got it right, but for some stupid reason, she didn’t wager anything, and now Anne’s namesake is called ”Boyd’s Rule”. Anyways, that helped Tom finish 2nd place in 2004 TOC Finals, because Chris Miller, who was leading going into Final Jeopardy!, missed, and went for the lockout. WOW!

I usually like those “If They Married” categories a lot. Today, not so much but I still put them all in the extra clues posts LINK

I agree with you, VJ. They’re usually a lot of fun, but today’s were not very good at all.

  5. rhonda says:

I sure hope Jeopardy will not be preempted tomorrow.

Yes! Luckily, first one for 2017.
