Final Jeopardy: American Theater (1-17-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/17/2014), in the category “American Theater” was:

This 1949 drama that ends with a requiem asks, “Why did you do it? I search and search and I search, and I can’t understand it.”

Current champ Sarah McNitt now has a 3-day total of $46,000. Can she make it four? We’ll see how it goes today when she is up against: Geoff Norcross, from Portland, OR; and Jen Aprahamian, from Los Angeles, CA.

Jen found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Nonfiction” under the $800 clue. She was in third place with $1,400, $2,800 behind Sarah’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

It’s the rhyming title of the book about “how a gang of fame-obsessed teens ripped off Hollywood. show

Geoff finished in the lead with $5,400. Sarah was second with $5,200 and Jen was last with $3,600.

Geoff found the first Daily Double in “The Mayo Clinic says…” under the $1,600 clue. He was in the lead with $12,600, $6,200 ahead of Sarah in second place. He bet $2,500 and he was RIGHT.

“You can get it through kissing, but you can also be exposed through a cough or sneeze.” show

Geoff found the last Daily Double in “Angels” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $19,900, he had $7,900 more than Sarah in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Luke 1 says “The angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named” this to visit Mary. show

Geoff finished in the lead with $24,500. Sarah was next with $13,200 and Jen was in third place with $1,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “DEATH OF A SALESMAN”?

Arthur Miller’s 1949 play about salesman, Willy Loman, won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play. Lee J. Cobb played Willy and Mildred Dunnock played his wife, Linda, in the original Broadway production. Dunnock also played Linda Loman in the 1951 film opposite Frederic March as Willy; and in a 1966 film adaptation opposite her original Willy, Lee J. Cobb. The lines in the clue are part of what Linda says at her husband’s grave, trying to make sense of his suicide and why she can’t cry. (IMDB Quotes)

Jen got it right and bet $1,599. She finished with $3,199.

Sarah also knew it. Her $9,999 brought her up to $23,199.

Geoff thought it was “The Maltese Falcon.” That cost him $2,500 and the game when he ended up with $22,000.

So, it did look like we would be saying sayonara to Sarah today, but her good luck held out with that bigger bet, and she remains the champ with a 4-day total of $69,199.

A question about Michael Shumacher? On life support and a medically induced coma?

There’s a news report out today where his manager says he’s in stable condition but “for the first time” doesn’t mention the word critical.

How many weeks ahead are these filmed? Probably months ahead? I just wonder what they would do if some famous person was killed or had some particularly bad publicity and they were part of a jeopardy question. I’m thinking it’s probably happened, but not sure.

they would probably issue a disclaimer, unless it’s REALLY bad. in that case they could probably substitute the clue and the candidate would have to answer the same wrong/right way, whether s/he knows it or not, in order not to change the result. but by then s/he would long be home. so a disclaimer would be the most sensible thing to do imo. i am sure they have some contingency plan ready.

the leading surgeon, richard greenwood was quoted saying:” if schumacher survives, he will not be himself…” that could mean some memory loss to being a vegetable. at best s. will need a lot of rehab. how much that will help nobody can say at this point. a first indication will be, when and if he comes out of his coma. it is induced and will not be lifted until the pressure on the brain is reduced to a safe level.

and again a peculiar wage by sarah. but she was obviously born under a lucky star, the leader being the ONLY contestant who missed fj. just $ 1.901.00 more for geoff going into fj and it would have been a runaway….and if geoff would not have risked anything in fj, he would have won, regardless of sarah’s bet.
