Final Jeopardy: U.S. States (1-14-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/14/2015), in the category “U.S. States” was:

The difference of this southern state’s highest and lowest points is only 345 feet, the smallest disparity among the states.

Current champ John Schultz has won $85,000 in 4 games so far. In his 5th game, he takes on these two players: Cyndi Pruss, from Kingston, Ontario, CA; and Joshua Qualls, from Lexington, KY.

Round 1: Joshua found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Earth” under the $400 clue. It was the second clue chosen and he had a hot $200. No one else had a penny. He bet the $1,000 allowance and thought it was the Aegean. That was WRONG.

John finished in the lead with $4,200. Cyndi was second with $2,400 and Joshua was last with $600.

Round 2: Joshua found the first Daily Double in “Cat-O’-Five Tales” under the $800 clue and once again, it was the second clue he chose. He was in third place now with $1,000, $3,200 less than John’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance and, this time, he was RIGHT.

Joshua found the last Daily Double in “The 19th Century” under the $1,600 clue. He was in a tie for the lead with John. They both had $10,600, $6,600 more than Cyndi. He bet $2,500 but did not know so he was WRONG.

John finished in the lead with $15,800. Joshua was next with $9,700 and Cyndi was in third place with $6,000.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS FLORIDA?

Netstate.com has a chart listing the highest and lowest points in all 50 states. They say: “The highest point in a particular state is usually a mountain, or at least hill” and “The lowest point of a state that borders an ocean is almost always sea level. Two states have interior places that are actually lower than, or below, sea level.”

Cyndi bet $5,900 and finished with $11,900.

Joshua bet $6,300. finishing with $16,000.

John’s $3,700 bet brought him up to the winning total of $19,700. His 5-day total is $104,500. Alex Trebek asked: “What will happen tomorrow?” One thing we think we can safely predict is that Alex will ask John what he’s going to do with all that money during the chat.

FJ Results: 1-14-15

Really, dudes? Someone please explain what it was about this picture that made both John and Joshua unable to identify one of the most reviled figures in American history? (We’re giving Cyndi a pass since she is Canadian). The clue was worth $1,200 (not that you really needed it): “Not a fan of abolitionists, he was a volunteer in the militia at the hanging of John Brown.”

VJ, you were surprised at the miss on John Wilkes Booth. Guess what? I was surprised at the miss on the Halle Berry clue also.

That story was everywhere. couldn’t get away from it. That miss shocked me.

    • VJ says:

LOL. Yes I was surprised at the Halle Berry TS, Jacob. I was frustrated with the art clue about the profession being illustrated with the sick child.

But I was just APPALLED at the JWB triple miss.

..so they did NOT overthink it and a clean sweep!
way to go, john! the ToC is waiting, meanwhile you have over 100K to tide you over (maybe more?). minus taxes of course, since he is NOT canadian….:)

Congrats John B. You were right with your fj prediction.

John Schultz is firing on all cylinders.

he sure is. funny though, although “john” is a relatively popular name i don’t remember when the last time we had someone named john as contestant, so of course i root for him.plus “schultz” points to a european ancestry, either german, austrian, swiss, maybe even dutch?
would be interesting to know. maybe they talked about it already and i missed it.

      • VJ says:

If you click on the “john” tag, all the games with a John will come up. The last one was John Pearson in the TOC.

The chat theme this week has been “how I met my mate”, so, no, you didn’t miss anything about his ancestry. Today, John talked about how getting fired from his last job worked out well for him in his current one.

        • john blahuta says:

well, maybe it will come up. next week tuesday we will have jeopardy at 9:30 pm!! normally it’s on at 4:30. first the state of the union, then all kind of schmonzes and finally at 9:30 jeopardy…. like we don’t know what state we’re in (pun intended 🙂
just in case: schmonzes is yiddish for unnecessary, stupid, superfluous, redundant etc. stuff…it fits perfectly for next tuesday’s programming. you’ll probably have j before the SotU, vj and jacob, since it does not start until 9 pm EST. lucky you! the price you pay for living in (sometimes) oblivious and ignorant paradise…..:):)

plus, he did not even get one dd today.had joshua been right at the last dd, he would still have been short by 100 bucks. if he had answered the first one correctly as well, then joshua would have finished with 16.700 before fj.he drowned in the adriatic, so to speak…..that first dd cost him the game.
