Final Jeopardy: 20th Century Literature (1-13-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/13/2016) in the category “20th Century Literature” was:

For factual details, the author of this 1972 tale drew on a book called “The Private Life of the Rabbit”.

New champ Amelia Hershberger won $21,200 yesterday. Today she is up against these two players: Megan Metcalf, from Nashville, TN; and Len Mucci, originally from Washington Twp, NJ.

Round 1: Megan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “‘M’ is for Shakespeare” under the $800 clue on the 4th pick of the round. She was in second place with $200, $200 less than Amelia’s lead. She bet the $1,000 allowance and thought it was “Two Gentlemen of Verona”. That was WRONG.

Amelia finished in the lead with $6,200. Megan was second with $1,000 and Len was in the hole for $1,000.

Round 2: Megan found the first Daily Double in “Channel Surfing” under the $800 clue on the 2nd pick of the round. Having correctly answered the $400 clue, she now had $1,400. Amelia and Len had the same as above. Instead of going for the $2K allowance, she made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

Len found the last Daily Double in “That’s the Theory” under the $1,200 clue, with only 4 clues left after it. He was in third place with $3,200, $9,200 less than Megan’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and came up with “containment.” That was WRONG.

Megan finished in the lead with $12,800. Amelia was next with $9,400 and Len was in third place with $2,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “WATERSHIP DOWN”?

In 1964 Ronald Lockley published “The Private Life of the Rabbit”. “This study of the habits of the wild rabbit gathered by Mr Lockley persuaded Richard Adams to write “Watership Down”, a kind of Disney story for adults, which became an immediate bestseller…. The two men became friends and went on an expedition together to the Antarctic…. However, ‘Watership Down’, which gave rabbits human characteristics and human-like problems, was far removed from Mr Lockley’s view of the animal world.” (The Economist: Ronald Lockley)

Len got it right. His $2,399 bet brought him up to $4,799.

Amelia also got it. She bet $6,400, finishing with $15,800.

Megan wrote down “Rabbit is Rich.” She lost her $6,001 bet so she landed in second place with $6,799. So that means Amelia won her second game from second place. Her 2-day total is $37,000.
