What a splendid show American Idol was, we suppose. We actually missed a little bit of it thanks to our AT&T U-Verse going out. Thanks AT&T – not! Oh well, it was only one performance, which we got to see anyway, thanks to Youtube. Really thanks.
Our standard for Elton John Week (March 30th) was to not even look at the performer until the song was half over. Thumbs up, if we thought that hearing them on the radio would not make us say “turn that &&*(&$$@@@* off!
So here are 3 contestants that we think are just as safe as regular birth control, not in the order that they sang, in the order that we liked them:
Lauren Alaina sang “Candle in the Wind.” We told you some people were selling Lauren short, like Ellen DeGeneres, thinking that Stefano will get in the Top Three ahead of her. Eat your words, Ellen.
JAMES DURBIN TOTALLY LOOKS LIKE
Pia Toscano’s performance of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” was excellent. Since they don’t play non-stop ballads on the radio, we would probably never turn Pia off. We might even say “Who is that?”
Did you know that Jacob Lusk was part of the choir who sang at rapper, Nate Dogg’s memorial servicel last Saturday? He was and the choir was also hand-picked by Nate Dogg himself.
Jacob sang “Sorry Has to be the Hardest Word.’ He got to meet Mary J. Blige at the rehearsal where he was working with music producer, Tricky Stewart. Jacob said he’s met a lot of people but meeting Mary J and working with Tricky was special. Jacob probably has the most identifiable voice of all the Idols. Not only would you definitely leave him on the radio, you probably would know who you were listening to. What a set of pipes. But a steady diet of Jacob might cause your ears to fall off.
Speaking of ears, we also think James Durbin is safe. We’re not putting him last because we liked him less than Lauren, Pia or Jacob. No, it’s because we actually watched his whole performance, which turned out good because otherwise we might have missed that eyebrow thing he does.
James went all out with “Saturday Night,” getting up on the piano, getting off it before flames burst out of it. In rehearsal, Jimmy Iovine questioned his song choice, but James Durbin insisted he was singing it. “One week you meet Hulk Hogan and you’ve gone gangsta,” Jimmy quipped. After the performance, Steven Tyler also quipped: “James, you brought the heat!” J-Lo said: “When you’re up there, I forget that it’s a competition thing. I feel like I’m at your show.” Randy said: dude, that was a great great great performance.” Ryan asked if he was worried about anything because it was so fearless. James said the only thing he feared was a “Pepsi moment” because he had so much hairspray in his hair (a reference to Michael Jackson’s hair catching fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial), but Ryan Seacrest evidently didn’t get it: “Coke’s our sponsor.” James said a coke moment is good.
So there you have it and we will bring you the other performances, including why they didn’t get into this post, the next time we wake up.
