Duets: Party Songs. J Rome Can’t Be Beat. Meleana Gone.

The 6/13/12 episode of Duets featured “Party Songs” and after all the amateurs performed with their celebrities, the bottom two were again left to sing for the right to stay.

Jason Farol and Kelly Clarkson – Satisfaction
We so wish Kelly had not made that remark about Where is the Love being a repetitive song a couple of shows ago. Now whenever she sings a song, we can’t help but think WTF? The Rolling Stones’ “I can’t get no … I can’t get no … I can’t get no ….” This song repeats itself a lot worse. All the judges felt that this was Jason’s best performance so far, which ain’t saying much if you ask us. The only criticism came from John Legend who thought Jason was trying to prove he could move in some places. Robin Thicke was just mesmerized by Kelly shaking her tatas in Jason’s face. Of course, he began at No. 1.

Bridget Carrington and John Legend – Last Dance
We’ve got to say that Bridget was in her wheelhouse last week with the Gladys Knight number and John Legend would have done her a much bigger favor picking a Martha Reeves tune, rather than a Donna Summer disco song. But it wasn’t bad at all. What a powerful voice Bridget has. The judges were impressed and Bridget went to No. 1.

J Rome and Jennifer Nettles – P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)
You’ve gotta give it to J Rome. No wonder dude’s number 1 every week. He burns up the stage. He carries more than his weight in every duet. Kelly didn’t think it was that hot though. She felt like he was impersonating Michael Jackson. Robin said the show is just a stepping stone. John Legend complained about it being a little nasal, but said he was awesome. J Rome shot up to No. 1 again, but with the reserved commentary, it seemed like they were leaving some room for someone to top him this time. Could it be John Glosson or Meleana Brown?

Olivia Chisholm and Robin Thicke – Let’s Stay Together
Robin brought his adorable little boy Julien to rehearsal because he doesn’t get to see enough of the little tyke. Now about that song, does Robin really think this is a party song? We think he chose it because he likes to sing songs where he can go “neeeeeed.” Yikes! Sorry, but we thought it was horrid from both of them. The judges didn’t say anything too horrible but nothing too great either and Olivia found herself in last place behind Jason.

Jordan Meredith and Kelly Clarkson – I Love Rock and Roll
We thought this Joan Jett classic was a perfect fit for Jordan even before we heard it, although the rehearsal was a bit scary and as it turned out, it really wasn’t that great. Kelly carried that one. All the judges seemed to think it was adequate while pointing out Jordan’s nerves and shoes. But Jordan still came in ahead of Jason and Olivia.

Meleana Brown and John Legend – Since U Been Gone
John Legend’s manager suggested they do one of the celebrity’s songs and they beat around the bush quite a bit before revealing it. But we figured it was a Kelly Clarkson number. We just have to really wonder what goes on in these people’s minds when they pick a song. Meleana said it was the first party song she ever sang and she had a ball. Kelly said it was a hard song to do and Jennifer said she’d never guess that was Meleana’s first party song, but they both called her out on being pitchy. Robin thought it was weird to hear John Legend sing it but he sounded great. Meleana came in behind Jason so she was now one of the bottom 2, ahead of Olivia.

John Glosson and Jennifer Nettles – Life is a Highway
Well, we couldn’t wait for this one. We bet John Glosson is a big party animal though he says not. Whether he is or not, to quote a certain judge from American Idol, we know that John can sing the phonebook. Before the performance, Jennifer said that anyone who says anything about John’s moves onstage is a hater. LOL. What we notice is how much of each duet the amateur carries and John, like J. Rome, always does it well. The judges were as impressed as we were. Glosson took over No. 3. So the final chart was:

1. J Rome
2. Bridget Carrington
3. John Glosson
4. Jordan Meredith
5. Jason Farol
6. Meleana Brown
7. Olivia Chisholm

Meleana Brown’s a Capella song choice was “Saving All My Love For You.” (Whitney Houston). Olivia Chisholm chose “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”(Bonnie Raitt).

Robin Thicke said they were both beautiful, spirited and had great voices. John Legend and Jennifer Nettles pretty much said the same. Kelly Clarkson said they’ve got completely different voices (yes, Olivia sounded awful and Meleana sounded great). She complimented them on their a Cappella work, noting that “there are a lot of famous people y’all hear on the radio that cannot stand up there and sing a song a Cappella and stay on key. Amen!” Jennifer amen-ed back. No names? We can think of quite a few.

After the vote, Meleana Brown was voted off. Incredible! From No. 1 to Aloha. John Legend appeared to gasp just a little bit, but came up on the stage to compliment her work. Meleana thanked everyone for the honor as she left the stage with her mentor. Did you feel like John Legend cost Meleana her place by listening to that manager. We think we know what Meleana will say next time she hears the words “bold move.”

Once again, a reminder that Duets will be on Wednesday next week at 9:30 Eastern. 8:30 Central.

J Rome is definitely a force to be reckoned with, but how about that John? He gives Jennifer Nettles a run for her money. He is a power house that could blow the house down if he was the Big Bad Wolf. My family and I were rooting for him and surprised he ended up third, but J Rome sang MJ so well.
