Cubs Pitcher Jake Arrieta Picks Up Where He Left Off Last Season

Going into the 2016 baseball season, big things were expected of Chicago Cubs righthander Jake Arrieta. After all, Arrieta was a big part of the Cubs surprise run to the post season in 2015. But we wondered if expectations realistically should be tempered just a bit. Arrieta had a career year last season, with a 22-6 record, a 1.77, three shutouts, a no hitter, and he won the National League Cy Young Award. That’s a pretty tall order for anyone to follow.

Well, if Arrieta’s first four starts of 2016 are any indication, he could put up similar numbers again. Arrieta threw his second career no hitter at Cincinnati, a 16-0 blowout over the Reds on April 21st. Arrieta’s record stands at 4-0 with an ERA of 0.87 and has allowed just 15 hits in 31 innings pitched in 2016. He’s the first Cubs pitcher since Ken Holtzman to throw two no hitters (1969, 1971).

Even though he only faced 29 batters, I probably would have pulled him after 7. The game was a blow out on the road. True contenders look at and past the whole regular season. It might be that I remember Kerry Wood also.
