Charlie Sheen Talks About Baseball

Published on June 30, 2011 by Sport Team   ·   No Comments

If there’s one thing Charlie Sheen likes better than booze and porn stars, it’s baseball.  Sheen talked about baseball with Sports Illustrated. “It’s not just a hobby.  It’s a religion” he told the magazine.  His favorite teams are the Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees.

Sheen was a pretty good baseball player in high school, but realized he wasn’t quite good enough to make it as a professional player, so he turned to acting.  He got his chance to do both in the 1989 comedy Major League, staring as flame throwing relief pitcher Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn.  He got into the role a little too much, taking steroids for a few weeks to build up his muscles.  He says his fastball went from 79 to 85 miles per hour.  While that admission does nothing to help his image, it is also true that real major leaguers were using steroids back then, too.

Sheen doesn’t mention it in the article, but he also had a dramatic role as a baseball player in the 1988 John Sayles’ film Eight Men Out.  Sheen played outfielder Oscar “Happy” Felsch in this film about the 1919 Black Sox Scandal.  So, Charlie has had roles in two of the best baseball movies ever made.

Charlie says he’d love to do another sequel to Major League (there were two sequels that didn’t do nearly as well as the original) .  Um, might have to call it Major League:  Old Timers Day or something like that, as the guys are in their late 40s and 50s now.  In the meantime, Sheen will continue to watch baseball.  “I don’t have a lot to do right now.  They took my day job” he quipped.   They’re taking steps to make sure he won’t be returning to Two and a Half Men period, so Charlie will be taking in more games for a while.
