As Spring Training kicked into high gear for the Chicago Cubs, a new and improved Carlos Zambrano told reporters that the three month anger management counseling program he underwent last year has helped him. “I’m cured” he said, adding “I got approval from the psychologist that I can be by myself”.
Zambrano was laughing and joking with reporters about the events of last summer, when one of his famous meltdowns in the dugout at U.S. Cellular Field led to a suspension and anger management counseling. There was speculation that a change of scenery was in order for Zambrano, but he came back from the suspension and pitched well, going 8-0 and the Cubs kept him around.
Zambrano was even unfazed when Cubs’ manager Mike Quade named Ryan Dempster as the team’s starting pitcher Opening Day. An intense competitor, Carlos Zambrano is as good a pitcher as anyone in the majors when he’s on his game and under control. Staying that way has always been a challenge.
