Former Auburn University quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton was selected as the first pick in the 2011 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers April 28th. Apparently, the Panthers have given up on Jimmy Clausen, the quarterback they drafted last year, but considering how bad Carolina’s offense was last year, maybe that’s not a bad idea.
Newton is big, he’s fast, he has a strong arm, and great athleticism, but the question that is often asked is how well he can transition to an NFL style offense where he doesn’t run with the ball as much and has to make more decisions and reads. All that comes with experience, and there’s no doubt he has the physical tools to compete. And his running ability is an added weapon for Carolina’s arsenal. Michael Vick has done pretty well running the ball. Carolina was only 2-14 last year and it will take more than Cam Newton to turn things around, but it’s a good first step for next season. Assuming the NFL resolves its labor dispute and there actually is a next season, of course.
