Bucky Covington: AI Country Alumni

With country boy Scotty McCreery riding high in American Idol Season 10, we decided to take a look at what’s going on with some other country singers from past seasons of American Idol.

We’re starting out with Bucky Covington from Season 5, one of our all-time favorites. We probably started really liking him in 1950s week (Top 11), when he performed Buddy Holly’s “Oh Boy.” No denying that Bucky has a great country sound.

A few weeks later, when they were down to 8 contestants, everyone had to pick a song from Queen. Ace Young sang “We Will Rock You,” and Elliot Yamin did “Somebody to Love.” Bucky sang “Fat Bottomed Girls.” They all ended up in the Bottom 3 and Bucky was sent back home to North Carolina.

Since then, Bucky has had three hit singles on the Hot Country Songs charts: “A Different World” at No.6; “It’s Good to Be Us,” No. 11; and “I’ll Walk,” No. 10. In 2009, his singles “I Want My Life Back” and “Gotta Be Somebody” made the country charts (No. 32 and No. 51 respectively; and in 2010, “A Father’s Love (The Only Way He Knew How)” made it to No. 23.

What’s Bucky up to now? He’s on his Hometown Tour that kicked off in March and will continue to criss-cross the country until at least September. The tour dates are all on his fabulous website, Bucky Covington.com.

Looks like we’re not the only Bucky fans. Tweeter.Faxo.com is running an “Idol of the Month” contest and Bucky is coming in a not-too-close second to Adam Lambert as all time favorite Idol of the Month. If you’re a fan of Bucky’s, mosey on over there and help close that gap.
