The Boston Bruins advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1990 when they shut out the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 in Game 7 of thNHL Eastern Conference finals May 27th. Boston will play the Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals in Vancouver on June 1st.
In this defense dominated game, the play of both team’ goalies stood out. Tim Thomas of Boston had 24 saves, while Dwayne Roloson of Tampa Bay stopped 37 of 38 shots. Nathan Horton managed to get the only shot past Roloson in the third period for the game winner. Remarkably, there were no penalties in the game.
It was the second shutout of the series for Tim Thomas, who has been getting the job done all season for the Bruins. He was at or near the top in most goaltending statistics this season. Vancouver had the best scoring offense in the NHL this year, so he’ll have quite a challenge in the finals.
The Bruins last won the Stanley Cup in 1972. Vancouver is looking for their first Championship ever.
