Roberto “Bobby” Alfonso Farrell, frontman and dancer extraordinaire of disco group, Boney M, has passed away at the age of 61, after complaining of breathing problems while on tour in St Petersburg. His agent, John Seine, stated that the artist had suffered from heart and stomach problems for a decade as well as shortness of breath, but indicated that these problems never affected Bobby’s desire to continue to perform live.
Bobby, who hailed from the tiny island nation of Aruba, was the only male member of Boney M, a group founded by German singer and composer Frank Farian. The other original members of Boney M, which formed in West Germany in 1975, were Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett of Jamaica and Maizie Williams of Montserrat.
Farrell, who spoke Dutch, lived near Amsterdam in The Netherlands. Always the showman, Bobby recently said on his website: “I like to look good on stage and to release all my energy in my shows.” He is survived by a son and a daughter.
