Katy is employed by Nucky Thompson as a maid. She interacts with Margaret Schroeder (later Thompson) and her children, Teddy and Emily, more than Nucky. She also entertained Owen Sleater in her room after he became Nucky’s driver and responded to her attraction to him. Katy is usually seen wearing a maid’s uniform, unlike Lillian, the children’s nanny.

In “A Dangerous Maid,” Margaret asks Katy to contact her estranged relatives in New York and ask for Peggy Rohan. Katy is told that Peggy is dead and later sees Margaret crying. Margaret seeks solace with a drink and a chat with Katy, Lillian and Pauline, the cook, telling them to call her by her first name. She asks Katy if she was born in ireland, but Katy was born in America. When Katy realizes Margaret is Peggy Rohan, she tells Margaret she will keep her secret, but is put back in her place.

Owen Sleater’s Irish charm lands him in Katy’s bed. Katy’s squeals waken Margaret but Katy denies hearing any strange noises. Katy tells Owen that Margaret thinks she “pinches” the silverware and fills him in on the Rohan family. Margaret lectures Katy on impropriety and then behaves even more improperly with Owen than she already has with Nucky.

Despite her own dalliance with Owen, Margaret continues to give Katy a hard time, questioning her about giving Owen coffee. When Owen and Nucky visit Ireland, Katy marvels at the short length of time it took them to get there. Snotty Margaret replies: “They’re called steamships, Katy.”

When Margaret realizes that Emily’s inability to move her legs is both genuine and serious, she calls for the servants. Katy appears in the doorway and is told to call Dr. Surran. Katy’s gaping hesitation earns her more rude treatment. Katy assists with collecting and burning Emily’s belongings after the child is quarantined at the Children’s Hospital.

After Emily is released from the hospital with leg braces, Owen helps Margaret fix a part of the brace that is chafing the child’s legs. He wonders if Margaret ever thinks about him. Katy comes upon the two of them and scurries off. Margaret appears to wonder if Katy overheard anything significant. Owen barely acknowledges Katy after this.

Margaret decides to marry Nucky and enlists Owen and Katy to witness the “sacred” event.
