Beat Shazam Recap: July 20, 2017

We’re about to watch the 7/20/2017 episode of Beat Shazam, bringing three new teams to the stage, new songs, another chance for one team to win a cool million and two old hosts (just kidding, Jamie and October).

Here are the teams with the nicknames we gave them.

  • SoCal BFFs: Rachel, a dancer & choreographer, and Alan, a world champ go-kart racer. They are best friends.
  • Spokane Spinners, Rachel and Chelsea, a pair of lean, mean spin-instructing machines
  • San Jose Bros: Amish & Raymun, brothers who grew up in a home that embraced 2 cultures

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING.
The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Lady Gaga
First 3 are worth $1000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $2000.
1. “Born This Way”
SoCal BFFs $1000 Spokane Spinners $0 San Jose Bros $0
Everyone got it but SoCal was fastest at 2.40
2. “Poker Face”
SoCal BFFs $1000 Spokane Spinners $0 San Jose Bros $1000
It was between SoCal & San Jose, and the Bros got in there first
3. “You and I”
SoCal BFFs $1000 Spokane Spinners $0 San Jose Bros $1000
Everyone locked in “Lonely Night” real quick and Just Danced like they knew they were right. We know Jamie Foxx loves that and so do we!
4. (Fast Track) “Just Dance”
SoCal BFFs $1000 Spokane Spinners $0 San Jose Bros $1000
Uh oh… everyone had “Bad Romance.” No one collected that $2K

Round 2: Country
First 3: $2000 each. Fast Track: $4000
1. “The Way You Love Me” (Faith Hill)
SoCal BFFs $1000 Spokane Spinners $0 San Jose Bros $1000
Jamie: “Everybody in the building knew this song, except for the contestants.” C’mon Teams!! There’s money to be made.
2. “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” (Big & Rich)
SoCal BFFs $3000 Spokane Spinners $0 San Jose Bros $1000
The Bros were out of this one. SoCal beat Spokane by 1/10th of a second
3. “What Hurts the Most” (Rascal Flatts)
SoCal BFFs $3000 Spokane Spinners $2000 San Jose Bros $1000
SoCal blew this one. Spokane beat the Bros for their first win
4. (Fast Track) “King of the Road” (Roger Miller)
SoCal BFFs $3000 Spokane Spinners $6000 San Jose Bros $1000
Spokane wins again!! And in 2 whole seconds better than any other team.

Round 3: Disco
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Third place goes home at end of round.
1. “That’s the Way (I Like It)” (KC and the Sunshine Band)
SoCal BFFs $6000 Spokane Spinners $6000 San Jose Bros $1000
This show sure loves KC and the Sunshine Band. SoCal beat out Spokane on this one, while it was “no way” for San Jose and their Ladies Night pick.
2. “Bad Girls” (Donna Summer)
SoCal BFFs $6000 Spokane Spinners $6000 San Jose Bros $4000
The Bros rebound with the only correct response.
3. “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night) (The Four Seasons)
SoCal BFFs $9000 Spokane Spinners $6000 San Jose Bros $1000
SoCal gets it right all by themselves. Well, this is still mo’ better than no one getting it!!
4. (Fast Track) Boogie Fever (The Sylvers)
SoCal BFFs $15,000 Spokane Spinners $6000 San Jose Bros $1000
SoCal scores a lone solve again and ends the round with a $9000 lead.

Sadly, it was so long to Amish and Raymun at this point. They were a lot of fun and we hope their tandoori and touchdowns dreams come true in the future.

Round 4: The ’90s
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000
1. “Don’t Turn Around” (Ace of Base)
SoCal BFFs $15,000 Spokane Spinners $6000
Two goose eggs and $5K down the drain
2. “Poison” (Bell Biv Devoe)
SoCal BFFs $20,000 Spokane Spinners $6000
Go SoCal. Picking up that $5 grand with the only right answer!
3. “Hold My Hand” (Hootie & the Blowfish)
SoCal BFFs $20,000 Spokane Spinners $11,000
Spokane got in there faster this time for a much-needed win
4. (Fast Track) “If You Had My Love” (Jennifer Lopez)
SoCal BFFs $30,000 Spokane Spinners $11,000
Both right again, but that big money goes to SoCal

SoCal has a big lead now but it’s not insurmountable at this point. There’s some big money songs coming up in the deciding round.

Round 5: Duets
First 3: $10,000 Fast Track: $20,000. Second place goes home with half their money.
1. “Ebony and Ivory” (Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder)
SoCal BFFs $30,000 Spokane Spinners $21,000
And just like *that*, with a win by a full second, Spokane is catching up
2. “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” (Meghan Trainor ft. John Legend)
SoCal BFFs $40,000 Spokane Spinners $21,000
SoCal is the fastest gun on this one.
3. “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” (Elton John & Kiki Dee)
SoCal BFFs $50,000 Spokane Spinners $21,000
With that win, the duet going forward is SoCal. Spokane can still hope for $10K off the next song
4. (Fast Track) “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing” (Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell)
SoCal BFFs $70,000 Spokane Spinners $21,000

The Spokane Spinners, Rachel and Chelsea, have to go back to the crib now, but they’re taking $10,500 with them. SoCal (Rachel and Alan) are going on to the last round.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at the million if they get all 5 right. There are no more multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. Boy Bands: “All I Have to Give” (Backstreet Boys) – $95,000
2. Oldies: “I Get Around” (The Beach Boys) – just “Get Around” wasn’t cutting it and now they’re in a different ballgame
3. Alternative: “All for You” (Sister Hazel) – $120,000
4. 2010s: “Lights” (Ellie Goulding) – $145,000
5. Queen: “Somebody to Love” – another miss when it sounded like “We Are the Champions” to Alan.

3 out of 5 right. However, (yes, we’re stealing that before Jamie can say it), those 3 good answers added a cool $75K to the amount they can take to a real bank: $145,000. Their other option is to try to beat Shazam for $290,000. If they don’t beat Shazam, their dough will shrink to $72,500. As always, Jamie gave them the Final Category name to help them decide, and this time it was One Hit Wonders. SoCal decided they were “all in” and Rachel was going head to head with Shazam. As Alan bit his fist and prayed, Rachel whispered “I’ve got this” and, oh boy, did she ever! Here is “Steal My Sunshine” by Len

Rachel plans to use her share of the money to expand her work rescuing and rehabilitating pit bulls and finding homes for them. Alan has between 40 and 50 relatives that he would like to bring out to San Diego for a big family reunion. Congratulations and good luck to both of them in the future.
