Bears Sign Jay Cutler to Seven Year Deal

Speculation that the Chicago Bears would allow quarterback Jay Cutler to test the free agent market proved wrong as the team signed Jay to a new seven year contract on January 2nd.  Cutler missed some games due to injury, and backup Josh McCown did a good job filling in.  But the Bears put the issue to rest quickly, locking up the 30 year old quarterback’s services through 2020.

This is actually a good move by the Bears.  Cutler appears aloof at times, and gets flak in the press and from fans, and while he’s not quite an elite NFL quarterback, he is a very good one and appears to have the support of his teammates. Hip hop artist, Common, gives the move the thumbs up in this TMZ video:

Chicago has an excellent tandem of receivers in Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall, and the three worked well together this season.  Since the end of the Jim McMahon era a quarter century ago, the Bears have run through a series of quarterbacks that include draft choices that didn’t pan out and veteran retreads at the end of the line.  Some stability at the posiiton  is in order, and now they have it.
