Andre Ethier is Now More Than Half as Good as Joe DiMaggio

Andre Ethier hit a bloop single over the head of Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney in the fourth inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 4-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium May 3rd.  It was the 29th straight game that Ethier has hit safely in this season, and he is now more than halfway to breaking Joe DiMaggio’s all time record 56 game hitting streak.   He is now tied with Hall of Famer Zack Wheat for the second longest streak in franchise history.  Wheat had his streak way back in 1916.  Ethier is also two away from tying the franchise record of 31 consecutive games set by Willie Davis back in 1969.

This milestone occurred at the same time that the Los Angeles Times reported that the Dodgers do not have enough cash on hand to meet payroll for the second payday of May at the end of the month.  If the club could not meet its payroll obligations, Major League Baseball would pick up the tab and have the option of seizing the team from owner Frank McCourt.  As it is, McCourt has already borrowed $30 million from Fox Television to cover April and the first payday of May.  Major League Baseball is already investigating the Dodger’s finances to see how the inept McCourt ownership ran this proud franchise’s finances into the toilet.
