Against the Wall: We Have a Cop in Trouble (S1, EP3)

In the third episode of Against the Wall, Season 1. Abby and Lina are investigating a case of police harassment. Abby has to deal with some sexual harassment herself; Richie’s Internal Affairs case over the teenager he shot last week is still active; and a couple of her brothers come pretty close to finding out Abby and Brody’s “dirty little secret.”

Four officers stand accused of harassing a criminal, Charlie Hughes, who set a fire that ended up severely injuring Casey, one of their daughters. The child’s father is the prime suspect when the firestarter turns up dead, but it’s a lot more complicated than that.

Abby is playing with her brother Steve’s little girls, Faith (Lindsay Duncan) and Ellen (Ava Preston), while he uses her bathroom. Steve notices Abby is taking birth control pills. He asks her who she is sleeping with but she won’t tell. Richie is there and says he has no idea and ask Abby if she’s found anything out about his case from “her buddy,” Carl Scott.

Carl Scott is not only not Abby’s buddy, he decides he can hit on her in exchange for information on Richie , but we find out later that Abby is too smart for Carl. (Anybody remember Chris Mulkey as Mayor Frank Hague in Boardwalk Empire last year?)

Abby’s mother, Sheila takes $500 out of her joint account, against her husband’s wishes, and gives it to Janice Lawrence (Lisa Berry), the mother of the teenager Richie shot. Sheila thinks it is okay since Janice doesn’t know who she really is, but when Janice finds out, it’s not okay. Sheila does what she can to help Janice accept the truth – that her son Jamarcus did commit a robbery and did have a gun.

Abby almost gets caught again when she is with her lover Brody (Richie’s partner), and Richie shows up drunk. Brody makes her hide under the bed. Richie see her bra in the bathroom but thinks it belongs to a redhead. He and Richie go out to get some food. Carl Scott, spying on Brody, has tape showing her leaving the apartment, looking quite disheveled, 8 minutes after Richie and Brody. Abby pulls out a tape recording of their prior conversation. But if Carl Scott can find out that easy, we suspect it’s only a matter of time before someone else does.
